Placements24 is seeking an experienced Telecom Core Network Engineer in Sandton, Gauteng. The role focuses on core network design, implementation, maintenance and optimization across EPC/5GC, IMS and transport networks, with hybrid work options.

The ideal candidate will have 7+ years in core networking, strong signaling protocol knowledge, and experience with NFV/SDN/Kubernetes. You will ensure reliability, scalability and performance for services nationwide.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
Minimum 7 years of experience in core network engineering with mobile core emphasis.
Deep knowledge of signaling protocols (SIP, Diameter, SS7) and related network functions.
Experience with IP networking, MPLS, and routing protocols is essential.
Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and virtualization (NFV, SDN, Kubernetes).
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; good communication skills.

Responsibilities

Design, deploy, configure, and manage core network elements (MSC, HLR/HSS, MME, SMF, UPF, IMS).
Monitor performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure high availability and optimal performance.
Plan capacity upgrades to meet evolving traffic demands.
Collaborate with RAN and transport teams for end-to-end service delivery.
Maintain network documentation and SOPs; evaluate new core network technologies.
Ensure network security best practices and participate in testing activities.
Provide guidance to junior engineers and operational teams.
