Job summary

Profession Hub is seeking a Senior Control Instrumentation Engineer to join our client’s team in Bryanston, Gauteng. You will design, develop and support control systems (PLC, SCADA, DCS) for mining projects and lead multidisciplinary teams through commissioning and FAT/SAT processes.

You will specify instrumentation, write specifications, manage vendor proposals, and ensure adherence to standards. A strong background in mining, project execution, and EC SA engineering registration is essential.

Qualifications

• BSc / BEng / BTech Electrical (Process Instrumentation) degree required.
• Registered Professional Engineer or PR Tech Eng with ECSA; candidate optional.
• At least 10 years in mining industry control instrumentation systems engineering and commissioning.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and support control and instrumentation systems for mining projects.

Our client is searching for a Senior Control Instrumentation Engineer to join their team in Bryanston.

JOB PURPOSE

To design, develop, and support control and instrumentation systems primarily within the mining industry. The role requires strong technical competence, the ability to propose effective solutions within complex process environments, and the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative in adopting new technologies, understanding broader business requirements, and contributing to high-quality engineering outcomes.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in a similar role, a solid understanding of project and team-based methodologies, and the ability to prepare clear, professional proposals and technical reports.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Proposal & Pre-Engineering Support

• Review client proposals with respect to control and instrumentation engineering requirements.
• Provide technical input for control system functional specifications.
• Prepare quotations and support commercial proposal development.
• Evaluate vendor proposals and provide clarification where required.

Control System & Instrumentation Design

• Specify field instrumentation and design integrated control systems (PLC, SCADA, and DCS).
• Design control system networks, including PLC, Remote I/O, switchgear interfaces, and vendor/client system integrations.
• Write equipment specifications, installation specifications, and scope-of-work documents.
• Perform as-built drawing updates and redlines for existing control systems.
• Ensure adherence to relevant standards and evaluate the quality of installed systems.

Engineering, Implementation & Testing

• Design, engineer, and implement automated systems from concept through commissioning.
• Perform point-to-point wiring checks, functional testing, and fault-finding on commissioned systems.
• Conduct control system Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
• Calibrate field instrumentation and verify functionality before system handover.

Field Commissioning

• Execute field commissioning activities for automated systems, ensuring full system operability and compliance with specifications.

Project Coordination & Management

• Assist in planning, reviewing technical work, and maintaining project schedules.
• Manage automation discipline activities within assigned projects.
• Work closely with Discipline Managers, Project Managers, and Engineering Managers to support project objectives and overall company goals.

Quality of Engineering Deliverables

• Accuracy and completeness of technical specifications for each project.
• Delivery of fit-for-purpose designs using appropriate and up-to-date technologies, including:
• PLC equipment
• SCADA systems
• Industrial networks
• Correct and consistent application of client, regional, and industry standards and specifications.

Technical Execution & System Performance

• Effective configuration, calibration, and fault-finding of field instrumentation.
• Quality and reliability of functional checks, testing, and verification of installed equipment.

Project Delivery

• On-brief, on-budget, and on-time delivery of engineering tasks and project milestones.

Vendor & Contractor Management

• Quality of recommendations and decisions based on thorough technical and commercial evaluation of vendors and contractors.

Client Engagement

• Successful execution of client training and system handover, ensuring user readiness and satisfaction.

Professional Conduct & Responsibility

• Demonstrated accountability in time management, attendance, and quality of work output.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIRED

• BSc / BEng / BTech Electrical (Process Instrumentation)
• Registered asa Professional Engineer or Technician (PR Tech Eng) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Registered candidate optional

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• At least 10 years' relevant working experience in the mining industry with a proven track record in control instrumentation systems engineering and commissioning
• Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations
• Knowledge of industrial network engineering and configuration; Ethernet, Profinet/bus, Modbus/TCP, etc.
• Brownfields and Greenfields project execution experience
• Ability to work across disciplines, have excellent communication skills and ability to work well with others
• Demonstrated ability in planning and organising, controlling, coordinating, and directing engineering activities.
