Job summary

Pro Tem in Pretoria seeks a motivated Control Systems Engineer with 3–5 years in mining to design, develop and test control solutions that meet client specifications. You will design system architecture, select networks (Ethernet, Profinet), develop PLC programs and create SCADA/HMI applications, then implement and train clients on the delivered system.

The role requires hands-on technical capability and a readiness to grow within the mining sector, complying with safety standards and delivering

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent in Electrical, Electronic or Mechatronic Engineering.
• At least 5 years of operational and design experience.
• Experience in control system design.
• Knowledge of international control system standards.
• Experience with PLC and SCADA systems.
• Experience with Schneider Control Expert, Aveva Wonderware, Rockwell and Siemens PLC/SCADA.
• Exposure to mining industry and Health and Safety Act.
• Mining industry experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design a cost-effective solution for projects to meet customer needs.
• Prepare a detailed design of the approved solution for the client.
• Design system architecture for software implementations.
• Design industrial networks (Ethernet, Fibre, Profinet, etc.).
• Develop PLC programs for client implementations.

• Test the solution to ensure full functionality.

INTRODUCTION OF THE ROLE:

Our client is seeking a motivated and technically capable Control Systems Engineer to join their team in Pretoria.

The ideal candidate should have 3–5 years of relevant experience in the mining industry, with a solid understanding of control systems and the technical requirements of the industry.

We are looking for someone who has practical, hands‑on technical experience and can apply their knowledge in real‑world working environments, rather than relying solely on theoretical knowledge. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong technical capabilities, a willingness to learn, and the potential to grow and develop their skills and expertise within the industry.

JOB PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the design, development and testing of any given control system according to client specific requirements.

JOB OBJECTIVES:

• To design a cost-effective solution for projects in order to meet the customer needs.

• To design system architecture for software implementations.
• To design industrial communication networks for software implementations (ethernet, fibre, Profinet, etc.)
• To develop PLC programs for a client for implementation of their requirements.
• To develop SCADA and/or HMI applications according to client specifications.
• To develop simulation applications for testing and training purposes.
• Test the solution to ensure that the designed solution is totally functional.
• To implement the complete solution at the client and ensure the optimal functioning thereof.
• To provide training and assistance to the client, to ensure that the client is able to use the system within the design constraints.
• To provide post project system support for the client as and when required.
• Standby for Service Level Agreement.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

• Degree, Technical Diploma or NQF Equivalent in Electrical, Electronic or Mechatronic Engineering.
• At least 5 year operational and design experience (inclusive of relevant design program exposure).
• Experience of control system design.
• International control system specifications and standards.
• Knowledge of PLC and SCADA systems.
• Experience in some of the following: Schneider Control expert, Aveva Systems Platform (Wonderware) certified (certification will be advantageous)
• Rockwell and Siemens PLC & SCADA experience
• Exposure and/or knowledge of mines Health and Safety Act.
• Exposure to mining industry.
