Job summary

Square 1 Recruitment is seeking a seasoned CNC Machinist/Programmer in South Africa to translate hands-on machining knowledge into accurate manufacturing estimates and quotations. You will assess drawings, materials, tooling, and cycle times to determine cost-efficient production methods.

The role emphasizes programming CNC lathes and milling machines (Edgecam preferred, Mastercam also considered) and developing methods for new components. Candidates with large/complex part experience are valued.

Qualifications

• 5–10+ years' CNC machining experience
• Strong hands-on experience with CNC turning and milling
• Proven CNC programming/CAM experience
• Edgecam experience is highly preferred; Mastercam experience also considered
• Excellent ability to read and interpret technical drawings
• Strong knowledge of materials, tooling, speeds, feeds, tolerances and machining processes
• Able to determine how a component should be manufactured and estimate time/resources
• Must come from metalworking/precision engineering/heavy manufacturing
• Experience machining large, complex or high-value components
• Detail-focused, commercially aware and confident making technical decisions

Responsibilities

• Review technical drawings and determine the most effective machining process
• Estimate setup, machining and cycle times for new components
• Assess material type, hardness and machinability for estimates
• Determine tooling, speeds, feeds, workholding and machining requirements
• Prepare accurate machining estimates to support quotations
• Program CNC lathes and milling machines using Edgecam
• Develop machining methods for new and prototype components
• Identify manufacturing risks and potential cost-saving opportunities
• Assist with tooling, jigs, fixtures and gauges
• Support Engineering and Production with machining and process-related challenges
