Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Engineer for a hybrid role in Upington, Northern Cape. You will design, implement, and optimize scalable bioinformatics pipelines to support large genomic datasets, collaborating with data scientists and software engineers.

The role blends software development with biological data analysis, requiring 5+ years of experience, Python or Java, cloud deployment, and experience with common bioinformatics tools.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of software development and/or bioinformatics pipeline engineering.
• Strong programming skills in Python or Java; C++ considered a plus.
• Experience with bioinformatics tools and libraries (GATK, BWA, Samtools, Biopython).
• Experience deploying applications on cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes; CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable bioinformatics pipelines and software tools.
• Implement algorithms for genomic and transcriptomic data analysis.
• Optimize workflows for performance and reliability.
• Collaborate with data scientists to integrate machine learning models.
• Develop and maintain unit and integration tests.
• Work with cloud platforms to deploy bioinformatics infrastructure.
• Troubleshoot data processing and analysis issues.
• Contribute to documentation of software and workflows.
• Stay updated with bioinformatics and software advancements.
• Mentor junior engineers and share best practices.
