Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Plant Pathologist to lead disease management initiatives, diagnose plant diseases, and develop effective control strategies for crops important to the region. The role involves lab and field work, collaboration with researchers, and communication of findings to growers and stakeholders.

The ideal candidate has a PhD or MSc in Plant Pathology or related field, 5+ years of research experience, and strong diagnostic and writing skills.

Qualifications

• PhD or MSc in Plant Pathology or related field.
• At least 5 years of research experience in plant pathology.
• Proven ability to identify plant pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes).
• Expertise in microscopy, culturing, molecular diagnostics (PCR/ sequencing) and serology.
• Experience designing and conducting field trials for disease assessment and control.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Excellent scientific writing and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage research projects.
• Familiarity with South Africa agricultural practices, especially in the North West province.
• Proficiency in data analysis software.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose plant diseases via visual inspection, laboratory analysis, and molecular techniques.
• Lead disease management initiatives and develop control strategies.
• Collaborate with national and international research partners on disease-related projects.
• Prepare scientific reports, research papers, and conference presentations.
• Provide technical guidance and training to researchers and stakeholders.
• Stay updated on advancements in plant pathology and diagnostics.
