Placements24 is seeking an experienced In-House Counsel in the mining sector. Based in a remote South African setting with travel to Rustenburg as needed, the role demands deep knowledge of mining and environmental law, plus strong negotiation and advisory skills.

You will advise on mining licenses, permits, and MPRDA compliance, support environmental assessments, and draft agreements with regulators and communities. The position requires autonomous work and proactive risk management.

Qualifications

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• Minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience.
• Demonstrable expertise in South African mining and environmental law.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice on mining and prospecting rights, permits, and licenses.
• Ensure compliance with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and other relevant legislation.
• Advise on environmental impact assessments and related legal requirements.
• Assist with the negotiation and drafting of agreements with stakeholders, including government departments and communities.
• Manage legal aspects of community development and social license to operate agreements.
• Conduct legal due diligence for new projects and acquisitions.
• Represent the company in discussions with regulatory bodies.
• Identify and manage legal risks associated with mining operations.
• Stay updated on legislative changes and industry best practices in mining law.
