About the Role

Our client, a prominent urban development consultancy based in Bloemfontein, Free State , is seeking a highly experienced Principal Urban Planner. This senior role focuses on strategizing and guiding the development of large-scale, complex mixed-use urban projects. You will be instrumental in shaping the physical and social fabric of cities, ensuring sustainable growth, efficient land use, and the creation of vibrant community spaces. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of urban planning principles, policy frameworks, stakeholder engagement, and a proven track record in delivering transformative urban development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the planning and design development for major mixed-use urban regeneration and new development projects.
• Develop comprehensive urban development strategies, master plans, and spatial frameworks.
• Conduct in-depth analysis of socio-economic, environmental, and physical factors influencing urban development.
• Engage and consult with a wide range of stakeholders, including government authorities, developers, community groups, and utility providers.
• Prepare and present planning reports, impact assessments, and development proposals to clients and regulatory bodies in Bloemfontein .
• Ensure compliance with national, provincial, and local planning legislation, policies, and guidelines.
• Provide expert advice on land use, zoning, urban design, and infrastructure integration.
• Mentor junior planning staff and contribute to the firm's thought leadership in urban development.
• Stay abreast of emerging trends in urban planning, smart cities, and sustainable development practices.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Geography, or a related field.
• Professional accreditation with the South African Planning Professions Council (SACPLAN) as a Professional Planner.
• A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in urban planning and development, with significant experience in mixed-use and large-scale projects.
• Proven track record in leading complex planning projects from inception to approval.
• Strong understanding of South African planning legislation (e.g., Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act - SPLUMA).
• Expertise in GIS software, CAD, and other relevant planning and visualization tools.
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage challenging planning processes.
• Experience in public participation and mediating diverse stakeholder interests.
