Job summary

AngloGold Ashanti seeks a Principal, Project Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical discipline across major global projects from concept through execution. You will ensure technical assurance, lean practices, and risk-informed decisions in collaboration with EPCM partners.

The role requires a PE registration and 8–10 years in mineral processing, with strong knowledge of heavy mechanical asset design and safety reviews. Johannesburg-based permanent position.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
• Professional Engineer registration with an international body (e.g., ECSA).
• Minimum 8–10 years in mineral processing or extractive industries.

Responsibilities

• Act as mechanical discipline SME across Global Projects from Concept to Execution.
• Review critical deliverables and ensure compliance with ASME BPVC VIII and ASME B31.3.
• Lead Lean engineering, MV solution, and safety in design reviews.
• Coordinate EPCM interfaces and external procurement for long-lead equipment.
• Drive safety leadership and constructability reviews.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

Acts as the mechanical discipline authority and Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the Global Projects function, reporting directly to the Engineering Director. This role drives technical assurance, risk-informed decisions, and lean engineering practices across major Organic Growth projects from Concept through to Execution.

Role Accountabilities

• Technical Assurance: Review and approve critical mechanical deliverables (P&IDs, MEL, layouts, data sheets) ensuring compliance with international codes like ASME BPVC Section VIII and ASME B31.3.
• Value Optimization: Challenge over-design and unnecessary structural complexity using Minimum Viable Solution (MVS) and lean owner's team delivery principles.
• Equipment Selection: Oversee selection for heavy materials handling (crushers, screens, large conveyor layouts), pumping, and fluid/slurry transport systems to match Process Design Criteria.
• Interface & EPCM Management: Direct external EPCM performance, resolve complex site mechanical queries, and manage technical procurement for long‑lead capital equipment.
• Safety Leadership: Lead and facilitate formal Safety in Design (SiD), HAZID, HAZOP, and constructability/maintainability reviews.

Role Requirements

Education & Qualification

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
• Professional Engineer registration with an International Engineering Council (e.g., ECSA or equivalent).

Experience, Knowledge And Skills

• 8-10 years in mineral processing or extractive metalliferous industries.
• 5 years at a Senior/Principal level within an Owner's Team managing EPCM contracts.
• Expert knowledge of heavy mechanical asset design, slurry hydraulics, and a value‑focused mindset capable of leading cross-geographical teams without direct line authority.
