Job summary

AngloGold Ashanti Limited in Johannesburg seeks a Principal, Project Civil & Structural Engineer to act as the civil and structural SME for Global Projects, driving technical assurance and lean infrastructure across major Organic Growth projects from concept to execution.

The role requires 8–10 years in mining infrastructure, plus 5 years at senior level within an Owner's Team managing EPCM contracts, and chartered engineering registration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Professional/Chartered Engineer registration with a recognized body.

Responsibilities

• Technical Assurance: Review and approve critical civil/structural deliverables including bulk earthworks, dynamic machine foundations, structural steelwork and surface water networks.
• Value Optimization: Challenge over-design and structural over-engineering using Minimum Viable Solution and lean owner’s team delivery principles.
• Specialist Governance: Manage and review performance of third-party technical specialists across geotechnical engineering, seismic assessments and hydrological modeling.
• Interface & EPCM Management: Direct external EPCM performance, coordinate cross-functional interfaces, support commercial packages for bulk materials and earthworks contracts.
• Safety Leadership: Lead and facilitate Safety in Design, HAZID, HAZOP, and constructability/maintainability reviews.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

Acts as the civil and structural discipline authority and Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the Global Projects function. The role drives technical assurance, structural integrity, and lean infrastructure practices across major Organic Growth projects from Concept through to Execution.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Technical Assurance: Review and approve critical civil/structural deliverables, including bulk earthworks, dynamic machine foundations (for SAG/ball mills, crushers), structural steelwork (conveyor gantries, transfer towers), and surface water networks.
• Value Optimization: Challenge over-design and structural over-engineering (such as oversized concrete volumes or heavy steel profiles) using Minimum Viable Solution (MVS) and lean owner's team delivery principles.
• Specialist Governance: Manage and review the performance of third-party technical specialists across geotechnical engineering, seismic assessments, and hydrological modeling.
• Interface & EPCM Management: Direct external EPCM performance, coordinate complex cross-functional project interfaces, and support commercial packages for bulk materials and earthworks contracts.
• Safety Leadership: Lead and facilitate formal Safety in Design (SiD), HAZID, HAZOP, and constructability/maintainability reviews.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Education & Qualification

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
• Professional/Chartered Engineer registration (e.g., ECSA, CPEng, PE)

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

• 8–10 years in mineral processing or mining infrastructure (earthworks, roads)
• 5 years at a Senior/Principal level within an Owner's Team managing EPCM contracts
• Expert knowledge of heavy industrial steelwork, soil-structure interaction, storm water management, and a value-focused mindset capable of leading global cross-functional teams without direct line authority.
