AngloGold Ashanti Limited in Johannesburg seeks a Principal Project Control & Instrumentation Engineer to act as SME for C&I across Global Projects, driving technical assurance, OT cybersecurity, and lean automation from Concept through Execution.

You will review critical deliverables, lead SiD and CHAZOP reviews, coordinate EPCM interfaces, and manage long-lead items like DCS controllers and control valves, contributing to safe, efficient mining operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic, or Control/Instrumentation Engineering.
• Professional/Chartered Engineer registration (e.g., ECSA, CPEng, PE).
• 8–10 years in mineral processing or mining automation infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Technical Assurance: Review and approve critical C&I deliverables and ensure compliance with international codes like IEC 61508/61511.
• Value Optimization: Challenge over-design and excessive hardware redundancy using lean delivery principles.
• Network & Asset Selection: Oversee tech selection for DCS/PLC/SCADA, OT cybersecurity, and process instrumentation.
• Interface & EPCM Management: Coordinate external EPCM performance and lead procurement for long-lead items.
• Safety Leadership: Lead and facilitate SiD reviews and CHAZOPs.

Principal Project Control & Instrumentation Engineer

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

Acts as the control systems, automation, and instrumentation (C&I) discipline authority and Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the Global Projects function, reporting directly to the Engineering Director. The role drives technical assurance, OT cybersecurity, and lean automation practices across major Organic Growth projects from Concept through to Execution.

ROLEACCOUNTABILITIES

• Technical Assurance: Review and approve critical C&I deliverables (Control System Architectures, FDS, P&IDs, I/O lists) and ensure compliance with international codes like IEC 61508 and IEC 61511.
• Value Optimization: Challenge over-design and unnecessary hardware redundancy (such as excessive triple-redundant controllers) using Minimum Viable Solution (MVS) and lean owner's team delivery principles.
• Network & Asset Selection: Oversee tech selection for DCS, PLCs, industrial fiber topologies, OT cybersecurity (firewalls, switches), and specialized process plant instrumentation.
• Interface & EPCM Management: Coordinate external EPCM performance, resolve complex site automation queries, and lead technical procurement for long-lead items (DCS controllers, control valves).
• Safety Leadership: Lead and facilitate formal Safety in Design (SiD) reviews and risk workshops, specifically HAZOP and CHAZOP (automation safety) reviews.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Education & Qualification

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic, or Control/Instrumentation Engineering
• Professional/Chartered Engineer registration (e.g., ECSA, CPEng, PE)

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

• 8–10 years in mineral processing or mining automation infrastructure
• 5 years at a Senior/Principal level within an Owner's Team managing EPCM contracts.
• Expert knowledge of DCS/PLC/SCADA architectures, SIL allocation, industrial OT networks, and a value-focused mindset capable of leading global cross-functional teams without direct line authority.
