Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer in Randburg, Gauteng to lead complex power systems design across energy generation, transmission and distribution projects.

You will provide technical direction, manage teams and ensure safety, reliability and efficiency in all designs while interacting with clients and regulators in South Africa. The role blends on-site collaboration with remote work flexibility.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with a Power Systems specialization.
• Minimum 12 years of progressive experience in electrical power systems design and engineering.
• Experience as a Principal Engineer or lead designer on major infrastructure projects.
• Expertise in power system analysis software ETAP, PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
• Strong knowledge of high‑voltage equipment, protection relays and control systems.
• Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.) registration is mandatory.
• Experience in Randburg, Gauteng or across South Africa is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design of power systems, including substations and networks.
• Develop detailed designs, specifications, calculations and drawings using industry tools.
• Conduct load flow, short circuit and protection coordination studies.
• Manage project schedules, budgets and resources effectively.
• Oversee procurement, construction and commissioning phases.
• Provide mentorship to junior engineers and guidance to mid-level staff.
• Ensure designs comply with IEC, IEEE and SANS standards.
• Liaise with clients, regulators and project stakeholders for alignment.
• Conduct design reviews and risk assessments, staying current with industry trends.
