Job description

  • Johannesburg (Rosebank) or Cape Town (Techno Park, Stellenbosch)
THE GENASYS STORY

The Genasys story began in 1997 with a founder who recognised that software was the key to improving insurance efficiency and customer experience. We have grown into a recognised insurtech leader with over 25 years behind us, a strong foothold in South Africa and the UK, and expansion under way into international markets. Our mission is to be the preferred software solutions partner to the insurance industry across Europe, Africa and the rest of the world.

Our core values are transparency, honesty, integrity and personal accountability. Our platform is a modular, cloud-based insurance management system that can be applied to any insurance business regardless of currency, language or destination. Clients launch products faster and cut operating costs by an average of 34%, transacting over £3 billion in Gross Written Premium and managing over 1.5 million policies globally. The system has 352 pre-configured product line templates and 486 documented API endpoints.

The platform covers the entire policy lifecycle: no-code tools for wholesale and retail quote-and-bind journeys, renewals, mid-term adjustments and cancellations. It lets insurers, MGAs and brokers build customised workflows, manage complex currency, taxation and multi-language requirements across regions, and support alternative models such as parametric, micro or embedded products.

We believe our people are critical to our success. We are deeply committed to fostering an environment of continuous learning and development, supporting our teams to drive technological expansion and attract top talent.

Join a team passionate about making insurance better for everyone through cutting-edge technology.

The Power BI Developer will design, develop and maintain the reporting and analytics solutions that turn Genasys platform data into insight for our clients, covering both new client implementations and the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of reporting for existing clients.

The role spans client-facing insurance reporting built on the Genasys platform (policy, premium, claims, and book-of-business analytics for insurers, MGAs, and brokers) as well as internal management information that supports decision‑making across the company.

Reporting is delivered directly against the Genasys operational data model rather than a data warehouse. Dashboards are sourced from a dedicated non‑production SQL Server reporting instance, where T‑SQL stored procedures, views, and functions form a curated reporting layer that shapes, joins, and aggregates the data before it reaches Power BI. Strong T‑SQL is therefore as important as strong Power BI in this role.

The successful candidate will be equally comfortable writing and tuning set‑based queries at the database and building the semantic models, DAX measures, and visualisations that sit on top of them.

You will be accountable for:

  • Data Access, Security & Authentication
  • Refresh, Deployment & Power BI Service Administration
  • Data Quality & Governance
  • SQL Development & Reporting Data Layer
WHAT DOES GOOD LOOK LIKE
  • Reports and dashboards are accurate, fast, and trusted as the single source of truth.
  • The SQL reporting layer does the heavy lifting: dashboards sit on clean, well‑performing stored procedures and views rather than large raw table extracts pulled into Power BI and reshaped there.
  • Semantic models and measures are clean, documented, and reusable across clients rather than rebuilt for every request.
  • Refreshes run reliably and complete within their windows without intervention, and without placing undue load on the source SQL Server.
  • Access control is provable rather than assumed: row‑level and object‑level security are tested against a documented matrix of user types before every release, and the evidence is retained.
  • No client has ever seen another client’s data, and no user has seen data outside their entitlement.
  • Insurance measures are calculated consistently and correctly across clients, and the developer can hold a credible conversation with an underwriter, claims manager, or broker about what the numbers mean.
  • Stakeholders feel heard: requirements are understood the first time, delivery timelines are realistic and met, and reporting steadily shifts from ad‑hoc requests to well‑designed, reusable solutions.
MEASURING SUCCESS
  • On‑time delivery of reports and dashboards against agreed requirements and timelines.
  • Report accuracy: defect rates and data quality issues identified post‑release.
  • Query, refresh, and report performance: query execution times, refresh success rates, and report load times.
  • No reporting‑driven performance impact on the source SQL Server or wider platform environment.
  • Zero incidents of cross‑client, cross‑tenant, or out‑of‑entitlement data exposure.
  • Security test evidence completed and retained for every client‑facing release, covering row‑level and object‑level security across the documented user types.
  • Stakeholder and client satisfaction with reporting solutions and responsiveness.
  • Reuse: growth in standardised, shared models and measures relative to one‑off builds.
  • User adoption of dashboards and growth of self‑service reporting over ad‑hoc requests.
  • Compliance: correct application of security, access, and data governance standards, and timely completion of periodic access reviews.
  • Quality and currency of documentation covering the SQL reporting layer, semantic models, measures, and the access and entitlement model.
ABOUT YOU

Your skills and competencies:

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving ability, with attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Ability to translate business and client requirements into effective technical BI solutions.
  • Pragmatic about where logic belongs, with sound judgement on whether a calculation is best solved in T‑SQL, Power Query, or DAX.
  • A security‑first mindset, treating client data confidentiality as non‑negotiable and defaulting to least privilege rather than convenience.
  • Clear communicator, able to present data insights and explain technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Mindful of the operational impact of reporting workloads on shared infrastructure, and disciplined about query cost and refresh timing.
  • Strong time management, able to prioritise and deliver across multiple concurrent projects and reporting requests.
  • Collaborative team player who works effectively with development, implementation, database, security, and client‑facing teams.
  • Self‑managed and proactive, with sound judgement on when to escal...
  • High personal accountability and ownership.

Your experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or National Diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or Statistics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a BI development or data‑centric role, with strong hands‑on Power BI experience across Desktop and the Power BI Service.
  • Strong T‑SQL development skills on Microsoft SQL Server, including writing and maintaining stored procedures, views, functions, and complex set‑based queries against normalised transactional schemas.
  • Practical query tuning ability: reading execution plans, understanding indexing and query cost, and writing reporting queries that perform well without adversely affecting the source system.
  • Proven ability to shape normalised operational data into report‑friendly models, applying star schema and dimensional modelling concepts within the Power BI semantic model.
  • Strong proficiency in DAX for measures and calculations, including filter context, time intelligence, correct handling of ratios, and security expressions, together with working knowledge of Power Query (M).
  • Practical understanding of Power BI storage modes (Import, DirectQuery, and composite models) and their implications, including the constraints that apply when a model is sourced from stored procedures.
  • Hands‑on experience implementing row‑level security, including dynamic RLS driven by an entitlement or bridge table and the use of functions such as USERPRINCIPALNAME and CUSTOMDATA, and the ability to test it credibly.
  • A working understanding of Power BI access and sharing mechanics: Microsoft Entra ID identity, workspace and app roles, and which roles enforce or bypass row‑level security.
  • Sound security instincts around credentials and data access: least‑privilege service accounts, secure storage of gateway and data source credentials, and awareness of what an export or a shared link can expose.
  • Experience administering the Power BI Service: workspaces, on‑premises data gateways, scheduled refresh, row‑level security, and deployment pipelines or an equivalent controlled promotion process

The following will be an advantage:

  • Experience delivering reporting within the insurance industry, whether at an insurer, MGA, broker, or insurance software vendor.
  • A working understanding of insurance data and terminology: the policy lifecycle (quote, bind, endorsement or mid‑term adjustment, renewal, cancellation), premium, claims, commission, and reinsurance, together with the measures built from them such as gross written premium, earned premium, loss ratio, claims frequency and severity, retention, and new business conversion.
