Job summary

Transnet is seeking a General Purpose Rating for Port Ops at Saldanha. This permanent role supports tug, launch, pilot boat, work boat, or floating crane operations within the port, performing deck and engine room duties plus maintenance tasks to ensure safe, reliable marine fleet services.

Valid GPR certificate required; will participate in safety drills and berthing operations as needed. The incumbent will work under the Resource Manager - Fleet Operations, in the Marine Services department,

Qualifications

• Valid Certificate of proficiency as a General Purpose Rating.
• Strong awareness of safety, risk, and compliance requirements.
• Willingness to perform deck/engine room tasks and maintenance duties.

Responsibilities

• Safely handle ropes, wires, capstans and deck/engine equipment during shipping operations.
• Assist in maintenance of deck and engine spaces, including cleaning and preservation.
• Carry out splicing of ropes/wires and make up heaving lines as required.
• Perform routine testing of deck and engine room equipment under supervision.
• Participate in emergency drills and safety procedures.
• Carry out berthing/unberthing alongside quays and rig gangways when safe.
• Adhere to safety instructions and report non-conformances to vessel officers.
• Store and secure equipment in designated areas for vessel safety.
• Maintain personal qualifications and certifications in valid status.
