Job summary

Transnet SOC Ltd in Cape Town seeks a General Purpose Rating to operate and maintain deck and engine equipment on vessels within port operations, including ropes, capstans, winches and related gear.

You will perform maintenance on deck and engine spaces, participate in bridge and engine room resource management, execute lookout duties, berthing, safety drills and routine testing to ensure safe, reliable marine fleet services.

Qualifications

• Must hold a valid General Purpose Rating certificate.
• Knowledge of deck/engine room practices and safety policies.
• Team player with good communication and incident management.
• Safety-conscious and proactive in following SOPs.

Responsibilities

• Safely handle ropes, wires, capstans and deck gear.
• Carry out maintenance on deck and engine spaces.
• Perform lookout duties on the bridge when required.
• Berthing duties and rigging gangways when safe to do so.
• Carry out routine testing and participate in drills.
• Store and secure equipment properly.
• Dispose of waste in designated areas and bins.
