Job summary

Transnet NPA in Saldanha is seeking a Marine Engineering Officer to ensure safe operation of electrical equipment, perform planned maintenance, and attend to breakdowns to maximize the availability of the twelve marine vessels. The role covers on-board diagnostics, plant operation, resource allocation, and leadership of subordinates in a strict safety and regulatory framework.

Applicants should hold a Certificate of Competency in marine engineering, with added project management experience.

Qualifications

• Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch or Designated Duty Engineer or Chief Engineer Officer (<1500 kW Port Operations).
• Added advantage: Project Management.

Responsibilities

• Maintain equipment per preventative maintenance schedules to ensure optimum tug availability.
• Manage on-board fault diagnosis and repairs.
• Operate plant and auxiliary equipment per marine engineering standards.
• Conduct checks of plant and equipment including surveillance while underway.
• Oversee periodic lay/overhaul of plant with Marine Technical Manager.
• Allocate resources including tools, power tools and spares.
• Train subordinates; mentor trainee chief engineers.
• Ensure a safe working environment and safe practices per policies.
• Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory and company requirements for the marine department.
• Attend to unplanned breakdowns.
• Maintain accurate records of engine room machinery.
• Maintain tug equipment per Transnet Code 29.
• Manage and control Quality Management Systems.
• Enforce TRANSNET environmental policies and standards.

Position Purpose

To ensure the safe operation of all electrical equipment, carry out planned maintenance and attend to breakdowns effeciently in order to maintain optimum availability of the 12 Marine vessels.

Position Outputs

• 1. Maintain equipment in accordance with preventative maintenance schedules to ensure optimum tug availability
• 2. Manage On board fault diagnosis and repairs
• 3. Manage operation of plant and auxiliary equipment in accordance with sound marine engineering standards and practices
• 4. Conduct checks of plant and equipment including operational surveillance whilst craft is underway
• 5. Manage periodic lay / overhaul of plant and equipment in conjunction with Marine Technical Manager
• 6. Manage and allocate resources including tools, power tools, spares etc.
• 7. Train subordinates, mentorship training of trainee chief engineers
• 8. Ensure a safe working environment and the implementation of safe working practices in terms of Company policies and legislative requirements
• 9. Ensure that all legislative, regulatory and Company requirements and procedures are complied with in respect of the marine engineering department on board the tug
• 10. Attend to unplanned breakdowns
• 11. Maintain accurate and complete records of all engine room machinery.
• 12. Maintain equipment on tug according to Transnet's Code 29 guideline.
