Job summary

Transnet is seeking a General Purpose Rating for Port Ops at Saldanha. This permanent role supports tug, launch, pilot boat, work boat, or floating crane operations within the port, performing deck and engine room duties plus maintenance tasks to ensure safe, reliable marine fleet services.

Valid GPR certificate required; will participate in safety drills and berthing operations as needed. The incumbent will work under the Resource Manager - Fleet Operations, in the Marine Services department,

Qualifications

• Valid Certificate of proficiency as a General Purpose Rating.
• Strong awareness of safety, risk, and compliance requirements.
• Willingness to perform deck/engine room tasks and maintenance duties.

Responsibilities

• Safely handle ropes, wires, capstans and deck/engine equipment during shipping operations.
• Assist in maintenance of deck and engine spaces, including cleaning and preservation.
• Carry out splicing of ropes/wires and make up heaving lines as required.
• Perform routine testing of deck and engine room equipment under supervision.
• Participate in emergency drills and safety procedures.
• Carry out berthing/unberthing alongside quays and rig gangways when safe.
• Adhere to safety instructions and report non-conformances to vessel officers.
• Store and secure equipment in designated areas for vessel safety.
• Maintain personal qualifications and certifications in valid status.

Position Purpose

• To serve a as a (rating) positioned in a capacity of GPR (Deck or Engine) on a tug, Launch, Pilot Boat, Work Boat or Floating Craneoperating within the confine of the port operations area.
• Be responsible for the safe and efficient handling and /or operation of ropes,wires, Winches, capstans, and other deck equipment during the shippingoperations,
• To perform maintenance duties on the deck, accommodation, tank, void, andengine room spaces of the crafts including general cleaning and housekeepingthereby ensuring a safe, and reliable and professional delivery of marine fleerservices to the client.
• Participate in Bridge and/or Engine Room Resource Management activities as andwhen required by the Master or Chief Marine Engineers Officer, i.e. performlook out duties on the bridge.
• Be responsible for the efficient and economical use of paints, working toolsand consumable stores.
• To safely operate all deck or engine lifting, towing, cleaning and pumpingmachinery as and when required by the Master and/or Chief Marine EngineerOfficer.

Position Outputs

• To safely and efficiently handle ropes, wires, capstans and other deck/engine equipment during shipping operations.To carry out and participate in maintenance duties on deck and/or engine room spaces of the crafts, including (but not limited to) general maintenance and spot chipping of corroded spaces and fendering equipment
• To carry out and participate in maintenance of craft equipment, including (but not limited to) general wash down of internal and external spaces, decks, superstructure, hull and /or engine room and workshop spacesTo perform hygienic cleaning of all domestic area including cabins, accommodation, heads and galley thereby ensuring safe and hygienic living conditions are maintained at all times.
• To carry out and participate in splicing of ropes and/or wires and making up of heaving lines as and when requiredTo carry out and participate in routine testing of deck and/or engine room equipment, under the supervision of either a Master and/or Marine Engineer.
• To carry out and participate in emergency drills and procedures in line with safety requirements and best practices.
• To carry out and participate in berthing duties (where safe to do so), moor/unmoor the craft alongside quays and rig gangways for safe access to vessel.
• To comply with all safe working instructions and procedures, report and non-conformances to the vessel officers (Marine engineer and/or Master).
• To carry out reasonable instructions as directed by vessel officers on board (Marine Engineer and/or Master) as determined from time to time for the safe and efficient running of vessels.
• To store and secure equipment in designated areas for safety of vessel.
• To dispose of waste in designated area/bins.
• To maintain (at all times) the relevant personal qualifications and certificates of competencies in a valid mode and ensure records are kept safely and readily available for inspection when required.
• To observe at all times the safety standards are followed thereby ensuring promotion of safety and wellbeing culture on board the vessel.
• To understand and comply all emergency signals and act accordingly.
• To perform fire and emergency patrols and report accordingly
• To perform lookout duties.
