Access World is a global commodity warehousing and logistics business. We specialize in handling, Storage, and processing of commodities including non-ferrous and ferrous metals, ferroalloys, project cargo, oil & gas, and other agricultural products. We are an approved warehouse keeper of the London Metal Exchange, and we provide LME warehousing and associated services to traders, producers, financiers, and consumers of base metals. In addition, we provide physical warehouse and related logistics services for commodities such as cocoa beans, rubber, cotton, and other agricultural products. Access World also acts as collateral manager of ferroalloys, minor metals as well as oil and gas. Regions operate in semi-autonomous offices with their corporate functions including commercial, finance HR, legal, and operations.

Purposes of the position:

The Operations Manager will oversee and manage maritime and breakbulk operations, including vessel coordination, cargo loading and discharge, cargo handling, storage and resource allocation. The role is responsible for ensuring operational efficiency, cost control, compliance with health and safety requirements, and adherence to customer service standards.

The successful candidate must have proven experience in maritime, port, logistics or breakbulk operations, with strong leadership and people-management capabilities. Responsibilities include managing operational teams, monitoring productivity and vessel turnaround times, controlling operational costs, managing stakeholder relationships, mitigating operational risks and driving continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

Operations Management

• Oversee daily operations including receiving, storage and dispatch to ensure efficient and accurate service delivery
• Coordinate Team Leaders and operational teams to align activities with business and client requirements

Inventory and Stock Control

• Manage inventory processes to ensure accurate stock levels and record integrity
• Monitor stock movements, investigate discrepancies and implement corrective actions

Operational Planning and Execution

• Plan and schedule operational activities to optimise resources, workflow and productivity
• Collaborate with supply chain stakeholders to meet client requirements and service level agreements (SLAs)

Health and Safety Compliance

• Drive adherence to health and safety standards to maintain a safe working environment
• Ensure compliance with operational procedures, company policies and regulatory requirements

Process Improvement

• Track and analyse operational performance metrics to identify gaps and improvement opportunities
• Drive productivity and cost-efficiency initiatives to improve overall operational performance

Performance Management

• Track and analyse operational performance metrics to identify gaps and improvement opportunities

People Management

• Lead, coach and develop Team Leaders to deliver consistent, high-quality performance
• Build a culture of accountability, teamwork and operational excellence
• Diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration or a related field (NQF Level 6)
• Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualification:

Bachelor’s Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management or Business Administration (NQF Level 7).

Experience Required:

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in operations management within logistics, freight or supply chain environments
• At least 3 years’ experience supervising teams within warehouse or distribution environments
• 3 years’ experience in vessel operations and breakbulk cargo handling

Advantageous Experience:

• Experience handling commodities such as metals, bulk materials or general cargo
• Experience in inventory management, stock control and warehouse management systems
