Job summary

SA Steelworks is seeking a Yard Controller to support the Meltshop Department. The role requires a 70% skills test pass and involves supervising two assistants, coordinating scrap materials, and ensuring safety and quality in yard operations.

Responsibilities include monitoring scrap and melting processes, directing trucks, operating forklifts, and maintaining housekeeping. A Matric with Maths and forklift license are essential; overtime and shifts are expected.

Qualifications

• Matric with Maths compulsory.
• Forklift and FEL license required.
• Minimum 2 years in Scrap/Raw Material control or similar.
• Computer literate.
• Strong knowledge of machinery.
• Ability to detect machine discrepancies.
• Steel industry experience advantageous.
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Willingness to work overtime and shifts.
• Must follow Health & Safety rules.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic calculations to ensure correct process parameters.
• Control scrap mix to maintain inventory and conform to specs.
• Monitor scrap mix changes against melting specifications.
• Identify metals not conforming to heat charge specs and handle per procedures.
• Monitor charging and melting to meet melting specs.
• Direct scrap trucks by material type for transfer to melting process.
• Coordinate internal scrap materials in the yard.
• Load trucks as needed and operate forklift, grab, and front-end loader.
• Supervise two assistants and set daily production targets.
• Transfer dust to the dust plant and maintain housekeeping.
• Recognize waste streams and minimize generation.
• Identify billets and ensure proper labeling.
• Inspect equipment and report malfunctions to management.
• Daily area inspections and report potential failures or unsafe conditions.
• Monitor production to meet daily targets and minimize downtime.
• Analyze potential failures and propose timely solutions.
• Promote safe practices and address incidents promptly.
• Ensure thorough shift handovers and report issues clearly.
• Comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations and company policies.
• Perform quality control according to set standards.
