Job summary

SA Steelworks in Cape Town is seeking a Senior Operator (Meltshop) to support the Meltshop Department by operating various mobile machinery. The successful candidate will be required to complete a skills test and work shifts.

Responsibilities include monitoring the charging and melting process, blending scrap, operating excavator and loader equipment, and ensuring safety and quality. The role requires 2+ years in a similar setting and adherence to HSE rules.

Qualifications

• Matric with Maths compulsory.
• Valid excavator, grab, FEL and forklift licenses.
• Minimum of 2 years working experience in a similar environment.
• Strong knowledge of mobile machinery.
• Ability to detect machine discrepancies.
• Willingness to work overtime and shifts.
• Must comply with Health & Safety rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic calculations to ensure correct process parameters.
• Blend scrap mix to conform to melting specifications.
• Operate excavator in confined spaces and monitor melting parameters.
• Operate forklift, grab and front end loader as required.
• Identify waste streams and minimise waste generation.
• Inspect equipment and report malfunctions to management.
• Conduct daily area inspections and address potential failures.
• Ensure thorough shift handover and report issues clearly.
• Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety Act and company policies.
