Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, and maintain library collections for the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
  • Deliver information literacy training to students and support development of Infolit offerings.
  • Provide postgraduate training and support research activities in the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
  • Offer research support including scholarly communication, digital scholarship and data management.
  • Assist researchers with literature searches and systematic reviews.
  • Provide reference services and build relationships with lecturers and students.

Job Purpose

We are seeking the services of a self‑motivated and proactive librarian to work as part of a team at the Wellington campus library and Agriculture campus of CPUT. The successful candidate needs to be service‑oriented and manage the diverse information, research support, learning, and teaching needs of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

The librarian would be expected to provide a wide range of services at this site supporting the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Business and Management Sciences and, when needed, at other sites of CPUT, particularly those supporting the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

This position requires the Librarian to work on Saturdays and after‑hours shifts when required and needed. You will need to be flexible and adapt to the constant changes that Librarians face within the workplace, and that may occur within CPUT.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor of Library and Information Science (Hons) or equivalent 4‑year Library and information Science qualification (Bachelor of Information Science (Hons) or Post Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Science (PGDLIS)
AND
  • 3 years relevant experience in a Higher Education library environment, which includes collection development, research support and training of students and staff.
  • The person must be able and willing to work across different campuses of CPUT and on the after‑hours shift roster when required.
Recommendations:
  • A Master’s or Doctoral qualification in LIS or relevant fields linked to the Faculty of Applied Sciences will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in supervising branch activities in a Higher Education Library environment.
  • Experience in supporting training, collection development and research in a Higher Education Library.
  • Paid‑up member of LIASA
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
The main Key Performance Areas (KPA):
  • Develop, manage, and maintain relevant library collections relevant to the Faculty of Applied Sciences in support of the learning and research focus areas.
  • Deliver information literacy (Infolit) training to students and support future development in this Infolit offering at the university library.
  • Deliver training programmes to postgraduate students and staff in support of research activities in the Faculty of Applied Sciences that includes niche areas.
  • Providing research support, which includes scholarly communication, digital scholarship service and research data management and metrics support activities.
  • Assist researchers with literature searches and systematic reviews.
  • Provide reference services for faculty information needs as required.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with lecturers and students.
  • Support relevant projects at CPUT Libraries
  • Create, update, and manage LibGuides related to the Faculty of Applied Sciences
  • Support the online client service initiatives.
  • Be involved in advocacy activities in the promotion of the library services.

All tasks in any aspect of managing and supervising branch operations and facility management, service support and support administration at the Librarian level, and as may be required from time to time in the work locations that require it.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the research process and methodology, including platforms used and advanced training practices.
  • Knowledge of information literacy concepts and training practices in aHigher Education Library
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Initiative, flexibility, and ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member.
