Job Purpose
The IT Engineer provides day-to-day desktop, network, and basic server support, split between remote support for most of the year and an onsite rotation at our Piketberg site during harvest season. The role suits a hands‑on, who can work reliably in a support driven, standby‑ready environment while delivering consistent service across remote and onsite periods.
Key Responsibilities
Remote & Desktop Support
- Provide remote technical support to end users, mainly via Microsoft 365 tools (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive)
- Install, update, and maintain Windows desktops and laptops (Windows 10/11)
- Monitor client systems and devices using RMM (remote monitoring and management) tools
- Perform basic troubleshooting across network and infrastructure environments
- Escalate complex issues to senior engineers where required
Network & Server Basics
- Support basic networking — Wi‑Fi, routers, switches, cabling, and VPN connectivity
- Perform basic server tasks — restarts, checking backups ran, monitoring disk space, and simple troubleshooting
- Assist with configuration changes and system adjustments
Onsite Support (Piketberg – Harvest Season)
- Travel to Piketberg for a 3-month onsite rotation each year during harvest season, when on-the ground support is busiest.
- Install and repair physical equipment, run or repair network cabling, and set up workstations onsite.
- Provide face‑to‑face support to the local team during the rotation
Incident & Request Management
- Log, track, and resolve support tickets through the service desk system.
- Ensure accurate documentation of troubleshooting steps and resolutions.
- Maintain communication with clients regarding ticket progress.
- Be available for standby duty outside normal hours when required
Client Environment Administration
- Manage user accounts, permissions, and access requests (Active Directory / Microsoft Entra ID).
- Assist with device configuration and deployments.
- Support backup monitoring and basic recovery tasks
Documentation & Security
- Keep client documentation, system diagrams, and password records accurate and up to date.
- Follow basic cybersecurity practices — secure password handling, applying updates/patches, and spotting phishing or suspicious activity.
- Handle client and user data responsibly and confidentially at all times
Qualifications & Experience
- Matric (Grade 12)
- IT Diploma / Certificate or equivalent technical qualification.
- 1 – 3 years' experience in a technical support or managed services environment.
- Previous experience in a managed service provider (MSP) environment.
- Experience supporting multiple client environments
Technical Skills
- Networking (LAN/WAN, Wi‑Fi, VPN, TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS basics)
- Microsoft Environments (Windows 10/11, Microsoft 365)
- Windows Server basics (restarts, backups, health checks)
- RMM (remote monitoring and management) tools
- Monitoring and ticketing systems
- Basic cybersecurity practices (patching, antivirus, secure passwords, phishing awareness)
Advantageous Skills
- Recognized IT certificate (e.g. CompTIA A+, Network+, Microsoft Modern Desktop).
- Exposure to cloud services (Microsoft 365 / Azure).
- Basic firewall or switch configuration.
- Experience supporting rural, farming, or agricultural-sector clients
Other Requirements
- Valid driver's license and own reliable transport.
- Own smartphone for authentication apps (MFA) and to stay reachable during standby.
- Good troubleshooting ability.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tickets simultaneously.
- High attention to detail, especially when handling user accounts and permissions.
- Able to work independently and use initiative, especially during remote periods.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new tools and client environments.
- Comfortable with light physical work onsite (e.g. cabling, carrying equipment, occasional ladder use)
