About the Role

Our client, a leader in manufacturing and process automation, is looking for a highly motivated and experienced Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Engineer to join their growing team in **Durban, KwaZulu-Natal**. This challenging role focuses on the design, implementation, programming, and maintenance of sophisticated control systems for industrial plants. You will be instrumental in optimizing production processes, ensuring system reliability, and enhancing operational efficiency through advanced automation solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs). This position requires a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, working closely with operational teams to deliver robust and scalable control solutions. The role is predominantly based at our client's facility in **Durban**, with potential for occasional site visits to client locations within **KwaZulu-Natal**.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, program, and commission PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems for various industrial applications.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues with existing control systems to minimize production downtime.
• Perform system upgrades, modifications, and enhancements to improve performance and reliability.
• Develop and maintain system documentation, including control narratives, logic diagrams, and network configurations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance, and project management, to define control system requirements.
• Implement and enforce cybersecurity best practices for industrial control systems.
• Conduct root cause analysis for system failures and implement corrective actions.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in industrial automation technology and recommend improvements.
• Provide technical support and training to maintenance personnel and operators.
• Ensure all control system designs adhere to safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of hands‑on experience in designing, programming, and commissioning industrial control systems.
• Proficiency in multiple PLC platforms (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi) and SCADA software (e.g., Wonderware, Ignition, WinCC).
• Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP).
• Experience with HMI development and integration.
• Knowledge of VFDs, servo drives, and motor control.
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
• Familiarity with cybersecurity principles in an OT environment is a significant advantage.
• Experience working within the **Durban** manufacturing sector is highly desirable.
