Job summary

Elchemie in Centurion, Gauteng, seeks a senior technical manager to oversee control room infrastructure and lead a team of engineers. You will design, deploy and optimise VMS environments and ensure system uptime across large-scale surveillance deployments.

You will manage cameras, storage, and networked security assets, while mentoring staff and driving process improvements. A PSIRA Grade A and 7–10 years of experience are required for this role.

Qualifications

• PSIRA Grade A registration is mandatory.
• 7–10 years in electronic security; at least 3 years in a management or lead role.
• Strong experience with VMS platforms, IP CCTV and large-scale surveillance systems.
• Knowledge of networking (VLANs, PoE, fibre).
• Biometric access control and thermal/AI perimeter detection would be advantageous.
• Valid driver’s license and own reliable vehicle; willing to undergo screening.
• Clear criminal record and ability to work in high-pressure environments.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day performance of control room infrastructure (video walls, servers, storage, workstations).
• Monitor system health and proactively identify issues before operations are affected.
• Develop backup, failover and disaster recovery solutions for critical security systems.
• Design, deploy and optimise VMS environments such as Milestone, Axxon, Avigilon and HikCentral.
• Manage camera configuration, recording schedules, motion detection, analytics and remote viewing requirements.
• Ensure the integrity of recorded video data and appropriate retention in line with policies.
• Lead commissioning and handover of new client sites; ensure integration of cameras and access control.
• Manage technical relationships with hardware and software vendors, including Tier 3 support and RMAs.
• Develop and maintain technical SOPs for technicians and control room operators.
• Lead, supervise and mentor a team of technical personnel.
• Conduct technical audits and report on uptime, storage, equipment performance and lifecycles.
• Provide guidance during critical failures and incidents.

What you’ll be doing

• Monitor system health and proactively identify hardware, network and software issues before they impact operations.
• Develop and maintain backup, failover and disaster recovery solutions for critical security systems.
• Design, deploy, configure and optimise VMS environments such as Milestone, Axxon, Avigilon and HikCentral.
• Manage camera configuration, recording schedules, motion detection, analytics and remote viewing requirements.
• Ensure the integrity of recorded video data and appropriate retention in line with client and legal requirements.
• Lead the technical commissioning and handover of new client sites, ensuring cameras, sensors and access control systems are correctly integrated.
• Manage technical relationships with hardware and software vendors, including Tier 3 support and RMAs.
• Develop and maintain technical SOPs for technicians and control room operators.
• Lead, supervise and mentor a team of technical personnel.
• Conduct technical audits and provide reporting on system uptime, storage capacity, equipment performance and hardware lifecycles.
• Provide technical guidance and support during critical system failures and operational incidents.

What you’ll need

• PSIRA Grade A registration – mandatory.
• Relevant Degree, Diploma, B.Tech or National Diploma in Information Technology, Electronic Engineering, Security Management or a related field would be advantageous.
• 7–10 years’ experience within the electronic security industry, with at least 3 years in a management or senior technical/lead capacity.
• Strong experience with VMS platforms, IP CCTV, control room environments and large-scale surveillance systems.
• Experience with biometric access control and thermal/AI-based perimeter detection would be advantageous.
• Strong knowledge of networking, including VLANs, PoE and fibre optic infrastructure.
• Good understanding of RAID, NAS/SAN and high-density video storage solutions.
• Experience with Windows Server environments and SQL for VMS troubleshooting.
• VMS certifications on major platforms would be advantageous.
• Strong leadership, analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
• Valid driver’s licence and own reliable vehicle.
• Clear criminal record and willingness to undergo the required screening processes.
