Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for our George, Western Cape facility. You will design mechanical systems for automotive applications, develop 3D models and drawings, and lead testing and validation efforts in a hybrid work setting.

The role requires a BEng in Mechanical Engineering, at least 4 years of automotive design experience, and strong CAD/FEA skills. You’ll collaborate with manufacturing, QA, and design teams to deliver robust, cost-efficient solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, preferably automotive.
• Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA) and basic FEA knowledge.
• Solid understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and automotive standards.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills; able to work in a hybrid environment.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize.
• Experience with simulation software for mechanical analysis is a strong advantage.
• Familiarity with ISO/TS 16949/ automotive quality systems is beneficial.
• Must be able to commute to the George office for hybrid days.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical systems and components for automotive applications (powertrain, chassis, or interiors).
• Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software.
• Perform stress, thermal, and vibration analyses using simulation tools.
• Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are feasible for mass production.
• Conduct prototype builds and manage testing procedures; analyze results.
• Document design changes, test results, and specifications meticulously.
• Participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss progress and challenges.
• Identify opportunities for design improvement and cost reduction.
• Stay current with automotive trends, materials, and emerging tech.
• Provide technical support to production and quality assurance.
