Job summary

Implats seeks a Senior Safety Manager for the Impala operation in Rustenburg to develop and implement the safety strategy aligned with the group strategy and establish an audit inspection function to ensure compliance and reporting.

The role requires an MMC/GCC or equivalent, a Health and Safety/Mining degree, at least 5 years in senior management in mining or processing, and underground safety management experience.

Qualifications

• MMC or GCC is essential.
• Health and Safety/Mining degree is essential.
• 5 years’ senior management experience in Mining, Engineering or Processing is essential.
• Experience in Safety Management (underground mining) is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develops an annual safety business plan for Rustenburg aligned to the Implats strategy.
• Develops leading and lagging indicators and reports for safety performance.
• Develops mandatory codes of practice for safety.
• Establishes legal safety structures for the Rustenburg operation.
• Develops managerial electronic systems for risk, safety statistics, Rand Mutual claims, audits and inspections.
• Keeps the operation updated on national safety issues via sources like Chamber of Mines.
• Provides formal consultation with Health and Safety representatives and office bearers.
• Continuously seeks initiatives to improve safety culture.
• Conducts analysis of leading and lagging indicators.
• Establishes an Organizational Risk Assessment (ORA) for safety and manages those risks.

Job description

To develop safety strategy for Impala operation aligned to the Implats strategy to establish and an audit inspection function for ensuring compliance and reporting against the Implats group strategy.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

• Develops an annual safety business plan with associated objectives for Rustenburg that supports the Implats Business plan.
• Develops a leading and lagging indicators to measure performance against the safety business plan and establish monthly and quarterly reports of these indicators.
• Develops any mandatory code of practice applicable to safety.
• Establishes the necessary legal safety structures for the Rustenburg operation.
• Develops managerial electronic systems for managing risk, safety statistics, Rand Mutual claims, audits and inspections.
• Updates the operation on national safety issues through various sources e.g. Chamber of Mines.
• Provides and establishes formal consultation processes with the Health and Safety rep structures and office bearers.
• Continuously seeks new initiatives to improve the safety culture
• Conducts analysis of the leading and lagging indicators.
• Establishes an Organizational Risk Assessment (ORA) for safety and manage those risks.
• Mine Manager Certificate (MMC) OR Engineering Government Certificate of Competence (GCC) is essential.
• Health and Safety/Mining Degree is essential.
• 5 Years’ senior management experience in Mining, Engineering or Processing is essential.
• Experience in Safety Management (underground mining) is desirable.
