About the Role

Our client, a prestigious financial services institution with a significant presence in Cape Town , is actively seeking to recruit a seasoned Head of Litigation. This senior leadership position demands a strategic thinker with extensive courtroom experience and a deep understanding of commercial and regulatory disputes relevant to the financial sector in Western Cape . The successful candidate will lead a dedicated team of litigators, manage high-stakes cases, and develop robust strategies to protect the firm's legal interests. Key Responsibilities

Oversee and manage all aspects of the company's litigation portfolio, including civil, commercial, and regulatory disputes. Develop and implement comprehensive litigation strategies to achieve favourable outcomes for the company. Lead, mentor, and manage a team of in-house litigators and paralegals, fostering a high-performance culture. Engage and manage external counsel, ensuring cost-effectiveness and alignment with strategic objectives. Conduct in-depth legal research and analysis to support case strategy and provide expert advice to senior management. Represent the company in court proceedings, arbitrations, and mediations where appropriate and required. Ensure strict compliance with all relevant South African laws and regulations pertaining to litigation and dispute resolution in Cape Town . Prepare comprehensive reports on litigation matters for executive management and the board of directors. Identify and mitigate potential legal risks and liabilities associated with the company's operations. Develop and maintain strong relationships with regulatory bodies and other key stakeholders.

Requirements

Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa with a minimum of 12 years of post-qualification experience, with a substantial portion dedicated to complex litigation. Demonstrated success in managing significant commercial and financial services litigation. Proven leadership and team management skills, with a track record of mentoring legal professionals. Exceptional advocacy, negotiation, and courtroom presentation skills. Extensive knowledge of South African civil procedure, evidence law, and relevant statutes governing financial services. Ability to think strategically and provide pragmatic, business-oriented legal solutions. Excellent report-writing and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal issues clearly. Must be based in or willing to relocate to Cape Town , Western Cape . Experience in managing cross-border litigation is a distinct advantage. A strong professional network within the legal and financial services community in South Africa is beneficial.
