The AI Art Director exists to own Spot's visual identity and to produce brand-consistent creative at a volume and speed a traditional studio cannot match — by leading with AI rather than using it as an occasional shortcut. The role turns briefs into finished, on-brand assets across image and video without a full production team, directly supporting the growth strategy by giving Spot distinctive, high-velocity creative across every channel and surface — from web and in-product to packaging and retail. It pairs non-negotiable taste and craft with the systems thinking to keep the brand coherent as output scales.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Brand & Visual System
- Own Spot's visual identity and build a scalable visual system that holds consistency across every channel.
- Maintain a well-organised, version-controlled brand asset library for the team and AI workflows.
- Hold the quality line — decide what is good enough to ship.
AI Creative Production (Image)
- Generate and art-direct imagery using AI image tools (Midjourney, Flux, Firefly, or current equivalents), controlling style, composition and consistency.
- Finish and refine AI output to production standard in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), including layout and artwork prep.
- Turn briefs into finished, on-brand creative — across web, in-product, campaign, social, packaging and retail — independently.
AI Video & Motion
- Produce and direct AI video and motion (Runway, Kling, Sora-era tools, or current equivalents) for ads and content.
- Own the Video / Halala output, bringing previously-outsourced production in-house.
Brand Governance & Enablement
- Run brand hygiene; identify and fix inconsistencies across existing assets.
- Lead internal brand rollout so the wider team can produce on-brand work.
AI Systems & Ways of Working
- Build reusable styles, references and prompt systems so brand-consistent output can be produced at volume.
- Apply taste and judgement as the final filter on AI-generated output; QA to a high bar.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education
Relevant degree or equivalent practical experience. Spot deliberately weights demonstrated capability and portfolio over formal credentials. The emphasis is on AI-native candidates — including early-career, high-potential talent — who can clearly demonstrate command of AI image/video tooling and AI-driven creative output, evidenced by a portfolio.
Experience
A portfolio demonstrating genuine taste and craft, including substantial AI-generated and AI-directed work, and experience building or maintaining a brand/visual system across digital and physical surfaces (web, in-product, packaging, retail). Fintech, telecoms or mass-market consumer creative, and South African cultural context, are advantageous.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES
- Distinctive visual taste and craft — able to judge why a piece works and hold a quality bar.
- Hands-on fluency in AI image generation (Midjourney, Flux, Firefly, or current equivalents) with real control over output.
- AI video and motion direction (Runway, Kling, Sora-era, or current equivalents); motion/editing skills (e.g., After Effects, CapCut, DaVinci) advantageous.
- Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) for retouching, finishing, vector work and layout — including print- and production-ready artwork.
- Brand-system thinking — defining and scaling a visual language that holds across channels and other hands.
- Comfortable designing across surfaces — web, in-product/platform, packaging and retail/point-of-sale — adapting creative to the formats, specs and constraints of each (screen and print).
- Brief-to-finished-asset autonomy without a full production team.
- Building reusable styles, references and prompt systems for volume production.
- Understanding of social-native formats and the South African audience.
At Ignition Group, digital and AI fluency is not a nice-to-have — it is a core performance requirement for every role, at every level. As AI and automation reshape how work gets done, the ability to work confidently and responsibly alongside these tools is as fundamental as any technical or professional skill.
What this means in practice:
- Digital fluency — navigating and using digital platforms, tools, and systems relevant to your role with confidence and competence
- AI tool adoption — actively using approved AI productivity tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot) to improve the quality, accuracy, and efficiency of your work
- Data literacy — reading, interpreting, and applying data and AI-generated outputs to make better decisions, not replacing your judgement but sharpening it
- Automation awareness — recognising tasks and processes that can be improved through automation, and contributing to those improvements
- Learning agility — staying curious, upskilling continuously, and adapting as tools and practices evolve
- Responsible and ethical AI use — understanding data privacy obligations, the limits of AI-generated content, and applying sound human judgement at all times
How this is assessed:
Digital and AI Fluency is an important competency for all roles in Ignition Group and will be assessed as part of the hiring process. The expected proficiency level for each role is aligned to the requirements of the role.
