Job summary

HID Global in Durban is seeking a Firmware Engineer to design, implement, test, and debug firmware for microcontrollers and embedded Linux platforms within a collaborative engineering team.

You will port software to new hardware, work on real-time systems, and help develop secure communication and device interfaces. The role emphasizes problem-solving, learning, and contributing to high-reliability access-control solutions.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of professional experience in embedded software/firmware development.
• Proficiency in C for embedded systems.
• Familiarity with microcontrollers, embedded systems, and debugging tools.
• Understanding of version control systems such as Git.
• Knowledge of UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, Ethernet, TCP/IP or similar.
• Experience using IDEs like VS Code, Eclipse or Visual Studio.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work in a collaborative engineering team.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain embedded firmware for real-time and embedded systems.
• Implement features, enhancements and defect fixes per requirements.
• Design, develop, test and verify firmware solutions.
• Assist with porting software to new hardware platforms.
• Support development and maintenance of communication protocols and interfaces.
• Debug and resolve issues during development, testing, and manufacturing.
• Create and maintain technical documentation on firmware design and implementation.
• Participate in design and code reviews and troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with hardware, software, QA and manufacturing teams.
• Follow established software processes and coding standards.
• Support secure communication and firmware update mechanisms.
