Job summary

Part of nGAGE Talent Limited seeks a Field Service Engineer to support operation, maintenance, commissioning and optimization of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across multiple sites in South Africa. Based on-site with regular site visits, you will perform planned and reactive maintenance, assist with testing, diagnose faults, and provide technical feedback to improve reliability.

Responsibilities

• Perform planned and reactive maintenance on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
• Support commissioning and testing, including performance verification.
• Diagnose faults and troubleshoot remotely and on-site.
• Monitor system performance and implement reliability improvements.
• Conduct firmware and software upgrades across installed systems.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental requirements.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation and service reports.
• Manage spare parts inventory and asset records.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to provide field feedback.

We are seeking a Field Service Engineer to support the operation, maintenance, commissioning, and performance optimisation of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across multiple sites.

The Opportunity

Joining a fast-growing international energy business, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of battery storage assets through maintenance, troubleshooting, commissioning, and technical support activities. Based in the Northern Cape, regular travel to operational sites will form part of the role.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform planned and reactive maintenance activities on Battery Energy Storage Systems.
• Support commissioning and testing activities, including performance and capacity verification.
• Diagnose faults and carry out troubleshooting activities both remotely and on-site.
• Monitor system performance and provide technical recommendations to improve reliability and availability.
• Conduct firmware and software upgrades across installed systems.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation, maintenance records, and service reports.
• Manage spare parts inventory and support asset management activities.
• Collaborate with engineering and product teams by providing operational feedback and field insights.

About You

• Electrical Trade Qualification, Diploma, or equivalent technical qualification.
• Experience working with high-voltage electrical systems.
• Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting capabilities.
• Valid driver's licence.
• Ability to work independently in field-based environments.
• Comfortable using digital reporting systems and standard Microsoft Office applications.
• Eligible to work in South Africa.

Preferred Experience

• Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) experience.
• Utility, transmission, distribution, or renewable energy sector exposure.
• Knowledge of HV/LV electrical infrastructure, inverters, transformers, and protection systems.
• Experience working with Eskom standards, procedures, or infrastructure.
• Understanding of electrical compliance standards and regulations.
• Familiarity with communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/IP.
• HV Authorisation or switching experience.
• HVAC or related technical certifications would be advantageous.
