Job summary

SMEC (an SJ Group company) in Cape Town is seeking an Engineer/Technologist to provide design and drafting services, prepare project documentation, and deliver technical support within the Urban Development division.

You will work on roads, stormwater, water and sewer bulk services, lead design work, supervise small teams, ensure drawing standards, and contribute to project management and client liaison activities.

Qualifications

• B.Eng or B.Tech in Engineering required.
• Minimum 3 years post-graduate experience.
• Proficiency in Civil 3D design and analysis.
• Understanding of local functional business technologies and markets.
• Knowledge of basic project management and the use of project management software.
• Maintain quality and timeliness of reporting.
• Planning of workload to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Design and modelling for Roads, Stormwater, Water and Sewer Bulk Services and Reticulation.
• Assist with supervising small teams (Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, Graduates).
• Lead on project designs when required.
• Ensure drawing standards and construction supervision requirements are maintained and deliver excellent client service when needed.
• Prepare reports and ensure compliance with codes of practice and SMEC quality control procedures.
• Support Senior Engineers/Technologists with project management.
• Develop understanding of Functional Unit technologies and markets.
• Construction administration and monitoring.
• Apply SMEC’s quality systems and procedures.
• Work with clients and municipal line departments to capture requirements.
• Develop specifications, BoQ’s, cost estimates, and prepare final tender documentation.

REPORTS TO

Section Manager and/or Function Manager

Primary Position Purpose

To provide design and drafting services, prepare project documentation, and deliver appropriate technical support as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Responsible for all design and modelling aspects – from planning, conceptual design to detailed design and construction drawings of Roads, Stormwater, Water and Sewer Bulk Services and Reticulation, etc.
• Assist with supervising small teams (Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, Graduates)
• Must be able to work in a team to support a leader but also take the lead on project designs.
• Ensure that required drawing standards and construction supervision requirements are maintained and deliver excellent client service if required when client facing.
• Prepare reports required by the project, implementation of all relevant codes of practice and ensuring that all work complies with SMEC’s quality control procedures
• Support Senior Engineers/Technologists with project management and take lead when required.
• Develop understanding of Functional Unit technologies and markets
• Construction administration and monitoring
• Apply SMEC’s quality systems and procedures and ensure enforcement
• Working with clients and municipal line departments to capture their requirements
• Develop specifications, BoQ’s, cost estimates, and prepare final tender documentation.

Recommended Qualifications, Skills And Experience
