Job summary

SMEC in Cape Town seeks an Engineer/Technologist to provide design and drafting services, develop project documentation, and deliver technical support. You will work on roads, stormwater, water and sewer schemes and assist in managing small teams.

Strong Civil 3D skills and a relevant engineering degree are essential. You will collaborate with senior staff, ensure compliance with quality control, and prepare tender documentation and cost estimates as required.

Qualifications

• B. Eng or B Tech degree in engineering is required.
• Minimum 3 years of post-graduate, practical experience.
• Proficiency in Civil 3D design and analysis software.

Responsibilities

• Design and modelling from planning to construction drawings for roads, stormwater, water and sewer bulk services and reticulation.
• Assist with supervising small teams of technicians, students, drafters and graduates.
• Lead project designs when required and deliver client-focused results.
• Ensure drawing standards and QA procedures are followed and reports are prepared.
• Support senior engineers with project management and cost estimates.

Position: Engineer/Technologist

Division: Urban Development

Location: Cape Town

REPORTS TO

Section Manager and/or Function Manager

PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE

To provide design and drafting services, prepare project documentation, and deliver appropriate technical support as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for all design and modelling aspects – from planning, conceptual design to detailed design and construction drawings of Roads, Stormwater, Water and Sewer Bulk Services and Reticulation, etc.
• Assist with supervising small teams (Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, Graduates)
• Must be able to work in a team to support a leader but also take the lead on project designs.
• Ensure that required drawing standards and construction supervision requirements are maintained and deliver excellent client service if required when client facing.
• Prepare reports required by the project, implementation of all relevant codes of practice and ensuring that all work complies with SMEC’s quality control procedures
• Support Senior Engineers/Technologists with project management and take lead when required.
• Develop understanding of Functional Unit technologies and markets
• Construction administration and monitoring
• Apply SMEC’s quality systems and procedures and ensure enforcement
• Working with clients and municipal line departments to capture their requirements
• Develop specifications, BoQ’s, cost estimates, and prepare final tender documentation.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• B. Eng or B Tech Degree in Engineering
• Minimum 3 years of post-graduate, practical experience
• Proficiency in Civil 3D design and analysis software packages
• Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets
• Knowledge of basic project management and the use of project management software
• Maintain Quality and timeliness of reporting
• Planning of workload to meet deadlines
