Job summary

SMEC in Cape Town seeks a Civil Engineer to deliver design and drafting services, prepare project documentation, and provide technical support from planning through construction drawings for Roads and Highways. You will work with a team of technicians and graduates, lead design work when required, and ensure adherence to drawing standards, quality controls and client requirements.

Strong knowledge of Civil 3D, MicroStation/Open Roads, and AutoCAD is expected, with a track record of meeting

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Engineering degree from an accredited university.
• Minimum 3 years of practical civil engineering experience.
• Understanding of local markets and functional business technologies.
• Knowledge of project management and the use of project management software.
• Ability to maintain quality and timelines of reporting.
• Planning of workload to meet deadlines.
• Proficiency in civil 3D design and analysis software such as Bentley MicroStation and Open Roads Design Software and /or AutoCAD and Autodesk Civil 3D or similar.

Responsibilities

• Lead on project designs when required and work within a team.
• Ensure drawing standards, construction supervision, and client-facing service.
• Assist with tender documents and bids preparation.
• Prepare reports and ensure compliance with codes and SMEC quality procedures.
• Support Senior Engineers on project management and take the lead when needed.
• Develop understanding of functional unit technologies and markets.
• Apply SMEC quality systems and ensure enforcement.
• Collaborate with clients and municipal departments to capture requirements.
• Develop specifications, BoQs, cost estimates, and final tender documentation.

Position: Civil Engineer

Division Roads and Highways

Location Cape Town / George

REPORTS TO

Section Manager and Function Manager

PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE

To provide design and drafting services, prepare project documentation, and deliver appropriate technical support as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for all design and modelling aspects within Roads & Highways realm – from planning, conceptual design to detailed design and construction drawings specific to Roads and Geometric etc.
• Assist with supervising small teams (Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, Graduates)
• Must be able to work in a team to support a leader but also take the lead on project designs.
• Ensure that required drawing standards are maintained, construction supervision, and deliver excellent client service while being client facing.
• Assist with compiling and the completion of tender documents and Bids.
• Prepare reports required by the project, implementation of all relevant codes of practice and ensuring that all work complies with SMEC’s quality control procedures
• Support Senior Engineers on project management and take lead when required.
• Develop understanding of Functional Unit technologies and markets
• Apply SMEC’s quality systems and procedures and ensure enforcement
• Working with clients and municipal line departments to capture their requirements
• Develop specifications, BoQ’s, cost estimates, and prepare final tender documentation.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor of Engineering degree/higher degree from accredited university/college
• Minimum 3 years of practical experience
• Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets
• Knowledge of basic project management and the use of project management software
• Maintain Quality and timelines of reporting
• Planning of workload to meet deadlines
