Responsibilities

• Develop electrical designs for solar PV and wind projects, including single-line diagrams and site layouts.
• Perform load flow, short circuit analyses, and protection coordination.
• Specify equipment (inverters, transformers, switchgear, cabling) and grid connection studies.
• Prepare reports, feasibility studies, and design documentation; review contractor designs.
• Coordinate with civil and mechanical teams and stakeholders.
• Support construction and commissioning phases and ensure compliance with standards.

About the Role

Our client is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy projects across South Africa, with a significant presence in the Northern Cape. They are seeking a motivated Electrical Design Engineer to contribute to the design and development phases of their solar PV and wind energy installations. This hybrid role involves a balance of remote work flexibility and essential on-site collaboration at our regional office in Kimberley. You will be involved in the technical design, component selection, and grid connection studies for utility-scale renewable energy projects. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles applied to renewables, proficiency with design software, and a passion for sustainable energy solutions. Key Responsibilities

• Develop electrical designs for solar PV and wind farm projects, including single-line diagrams, site layouts, and component specifications.
• Perform electrical calculations such as load flow, short circuit analysis, and protection coordination.
• Specify and select electrical equipment, including inverters, transformers, switchgear, and cabling.
• Conduct grid connection studies and prepare necessary documentation for utility approvals.
• Coordinate designs with other engineering disciplines (civil, mechanical) and stakeholders.
• Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, and design documentation.
• Assist in the review of contractor designs and submittals.
• Stay updated on the latest technologies and best practices in renewable energy electrical design.
• Support the project team during the construction and commissioning phases as needed.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant South African electrical standards, SANS codes, and grid codes.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in electrical design, with a focus on renewable energy projects (solar or wind).
• Proficiency in electrical design software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, or similar.
• Understanding of power system analysis and grid integration concepts.
• Knowledge of South African grid codes and relevant electrical standards.
• Familiarity with SCADA systems for renewable energy plants is a plus.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Ability to work effectively in a hybrid team environment, including remote collaboration.
• Experience with ECSA registration (Pr. Eng or Pr. Tech Eng) is advantageous.
