Job summary

Investec Sandton is seeking a Design System Engineer to support and evolve a global shared digital infrastructure within the Client Experience Technology division. The role focuses on building reusable components, design tokens and patterns, along with documenting and tooling for designers, engineers and AI agents.

You will contribute to Angular modernisation efforts, governance, and scalable adoption across teams, while exploring AI-enabled workflows to enhance delivery and consistency.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of accessibility, tokens, testing, CI/CD and DX.

Investec Sandton is looking for a Design System Engineer to join the team in the Client Experience Technology (CXT) division to assist with supporting and evolving the shared digital infrastructure across Investec globally. The Design System team underpins consistent digital experiences across the organisation. In addition to building and maintaining reusable components, patterns and design tokens, the team enables adoption across engineering and design teams, supports critical technology upgrades such as Angular modernisation, establishes adoption metrics, provides governance and documentation, and is evolving the platform to support both AI-assisted and human development at scale.

Demand for the team's services continues to grow as adoption expands across Investec and AI becomes increasingly embedded within the delivery processes. The Design System team is not only looking for an individual who will maintain existing services and supporting delivery needs, but also join them on their scale adoption journey, accelerating strategic initiatives to realise the full value of a capability that benefits teams across Investec.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain accessible, reusable components, patterns and design tokens.
• Create clear, structured documentation and tooling for designers, engineers and AI agents.
• Explore how AI can improve design-system discovery, adoption, contribution and quality assurance.
• Help teams move from intent to production quickly, without losing consistency or craft.
• Work with design and engineering teams to drive adoption and evolve the system around real consumer needs.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

• Strong web platform fundamentals: HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
• Strong experience of at least one of React, React Native or Angular.
• Practical experience building or contributing to design systems and component libraries.
• A good understanding of accessibility, design tokens, testing, CI/CD and developer experience.
• An ability to design clear component APIs and technical documentation for different consumers.
• Experience with Figma and design-system documentation tools such as Storybook or Zeroheight.
• Experience designing inclusive experiences for people with diverse access needs.
• Proficiency in using AI-enabled productivity tools, such as Copilot, to improve efficiency, generate insight and support decision-making. Applies critical thinking and sound judgement when interpreting outputs, remains accountable for the quality and accuracy of their work.
• Practical experience using AI-enabled development tools and designing structured, machine-readable guidance that helps AI agents use the design system effectively.
