Job summary

Network Finance is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design, develop and optimise conveyor systems for mining and bulk materials handling in South Africa. You will manage design through to manufacturing, installation and commissioning, with emphasis on belt conveyors and related equipment.

The role requires hands-on experience with conveyor design calculations, SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and the ability to liaise with clients, suppliers and site personnel. Travel to mine sites will be required.

Qualifications

• BEng/BSc/BTech in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Experience in design of belt conveyor systems.
• Proven experience with conveyor design calculations.
• Experience in mining/minerals processing or bulk materials handling.
• Proficiency with SolidWorks/AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop belt conveyor systems for mining and bulk materials handling.
• Perform conveyor design calculations (belt tensions, power, width, speed, drive sizing, take-up).
• Develop layouts, general arrangements and detailed drawings.
• Specify components and equipment and prepare BOMs.
• Provide technical support during manufacturing, installation and commissioning.
• Liaise with clients, suppliers and site personnel throughout the project lifecycle.

Job description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development and optimisation of conveyor systems and bulk materials handling equipment, from concept and detailed design through to manufacturing, installation and commissioning.
This role is ideal for a Mechanical Engineer with strong experience in belt conveyor design, bulk materials handling and mechanical engineering, particularly within the mining and minerals processing environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and develop belt conveyor systems for mining, minerals processing and bulk materials handling applications.
• Perform conveyor design calculations, including:
  • Belt tensions and power requirements
  • Belt width and speed selection
  • Drive sizing
  • Take-up requirements
  • Pulley sizing
  • Idler selection
  • Structural loading
  • Material throughput
• Design conveyor components and associated mechanical equipment.
• Develop conveyor layouts, general arrangements and detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Design and integrate:
  • Head and tail pulleys
  • Drive stations
  • Take-up systems
  • Idler arrangements
  • Chutes and transfer points
  • Skirting systems
  • Belt cleaners
  • Walkways and platforms
  • Guards and safety systems
• Develop equipment specifications, datasheets, BOMs and technical documentation.
• Select and specify mechanical components and equipment.
• Conduct design reviews and ensure designs meet project and customer requirements.
• Liaise with clients, suppliers, fabricators and site personnel throughout the project lifecycle.
• Provide technical support during manufacturing, installation and commissioning.
• Conduct site inspections and investigations where required.
• Assist with troubleshooting and resolving conveyor-related mechanical problems.
• Review and approve engineering drawings and documentation.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering standards, specifications and safety requirements.
• Assist with cost estimates, technical proposals and tender submissions.
• Identify opportunities to improve conveyor performance, reliability, maintainability and efficiency.
• Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• BEng/BSc/BTech in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Relevant mechanical engineering experience, preferably in conveyor systems or bulk materials handling.
• Proven experience in the design of belt conveyor systems.
• Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
• Experience with conveyor design calculations and component selection.
• Experience working in the mining, minerals processing, materials handling or heavy industrial sector will be highly advantageous.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD or similar mechanical design software.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes.
• Valid driver's licence.
• Willingness to travel to mine and project sites when required.
