Job summary

Afrique Connection Consultancy is seeking a Deli Supervisor in the Western Cape to run the in-store deli, ensuring quality, hygiene, customer service and profitability. You will supervise staff, manage stock and production, and ensure compliance with HACCP standards in a fast-paced retail environment.

The role requires 3–5 years in deli or fresh food retail, plus 1–2 years of supervisory experience. Strong leadership and understanding of food safety are essential for success in this position.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years’ experience in a deli, food service or fresh food retail environment.
• 1–2 years’ supervisory experience.
• Experience in food preparation and handling (essential).
• Knowledge of food safety and HACCP standards.

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily deli operations to ensure smooth and efficient service.
• Allocate tasks to deli staff and monitor performance.
• Ensure food preparation, display and service meet company standards.
• Oversee opening and closing procedures of the deli department.
• Supervise, train and support deli counterhands and assistants.
• Conduct on-the-job training in food preparation, hygiene and customer service.
• Monitor staff attendance, punctuality and performance.
• Assist with scheduling and shift planning.
• Ensure all deli products are prepared and presented according to standards.
• Monitor freshness, portion control and food presentation.
• Oversee hot and cold food preparation areas.
• Remove expired, damaged or non-compliant stock.
• Ensure compliance with food safety, HACCP and hygiene standards.
• Check cleanliness of equipment, counters and storage areas regularly.
• Ensure staff follow personal hygiene and PPE requirements.
• Monitor temperature control of hot and cold food displays.
• Monitor stock levels and order deli products on time.
• Reduce wastage and control shrinkage.
• Conduct regular stock counts and reconciliations, and liaise with suppliers and store management.
• Ensure excellent customer service at all times.
• Handle customer complaints and resolve issues professionally.
• Promote deli products and assist with upselling and promotions.
• Ensure proper use, cleaning and maintenance of deli equipment (slicers, ovens, warmers, scales), and report faults.
• Maintain production, wastage and sales records.
• Prepare daily and weekly reports on deli performance and support promotional planning.
