Purpose
To underwrite commercial motor risks in support of building and retaining a profitable, growing and compliant motor book and to provide superior customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle telephonic queries as received and / or provide e-mail support to brokers / Intermediaries.
- Support the Senior Underwriter with monthly renewal preparations and daily quote requests.
- To build a value-add relationship with Brokers / Intermediaries.
- Assisting with resolving insurance queries within required timeframe and compliance requirements.
- Uphold our Customer Charter experience.
- Maintain underwriting processes to ensure compliance and growth.
- Preparation of risks for internal weekly meetings.
- Ensure Underwriting criteria and conditions are met to protect the book of motor business in line with our binder requirements.
- Ensure timeous and accurate processing of quotations and renewals.
- Reviewing of quoting and placing slips, ensuring data integrity and strict processes are followed.
- Responsible for handling high volumes of renewals, new business requests and queries.
- Ensuring all written correspondence is saved electronically.
- Occasional liaising with internal departments to ensure superior service is offered to our brokers.
- Handle complaints in a professional manner and escape to Management where necessary.
- Assistance with ad hoc requests where required at request of the Senior Underwriter as well as Inter-Department requests.
- Prioritizing Emails and understanding how to manage work flows effectively.
Key Performance Indicators
At the start of each financial year the Key Performance Areas (KPA’s) linked to the position will be agreed upon and incorporated into the performance score card for the financial year.
Examples of this would be:
- Accuracy of renewals and quotations.
- Timeous turnaround of monthly renewals and daily quote requests.
- Assistance with growing the book of business and retention of business.
- Ability to conduct own risk analysis of renewal actions and new business profiling.
- Timeous and accurate processing of quote information.
- Effective profiling of the risk and adhering to strict underwriting criteria.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Educational / Legal Requirements
- Grade 12
- NQF 4 would be advantageous.

Workplace Experience
- A minimum of 5 years’ underwriting experience with a short-term commercial insurance environment.
- Well versed in business English (written and verbal) - good writing and communication skills.
- Knowledge of customer service.
Technical Knowledge & Skills
- Computer literacy – Microsoft Office: proficient in Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Numerical and Mathematical skills.
- Discretion and high levels of trust.
- Excellent analytical skills and a good knowledge of Motor Insurance is essential.
