Job summary

CDM Smith in Pretoria seeks a Civil/Structural Engineer to lead the civil and structural preliminary design for a major water-conveyance feasibility study across Lesotho, South Africa and Botswana. You will develop reservoir and pump-station concepts, evaluate foundations, and coordinate with geotechnical and M&E teams.

The role requires a Master’s in Structural Engineering, 15+ years of post‑qualification experience, and professional engineering registration. Travel up to 40% may be required.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Structural Engineering is required.
• 15 years post-qualification experience in reservoir/hydraulic structures.
• Registration as a professional engineer in a recognized body.

Responsibilities

• Establish design criteria, loading cases, factors of safety, and applicable codes and standards.
• Lead the preliminary civil/structural design for reservoirs, break‑pressure tanks, pump-station buildings, and other major structures.
• Perform structural, stability, deformation, stress, seepage, foundation treatment and related analyses.
• Develop reinforced‑concrete concepts, dimensions, reinforcement estimates, and quantities.
• Coordinate foundations and earthworks with geotechnical findings including dolomitic terrain and river crossings.
• Develop structure layouts, plans, sections, details, temporary works concepts and safety inputs.
• Support HAZOP, reliability analysis, climate-risk assessment, and asset management planning.
• Prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, bills of quantities, and cost estimates.
• Coordinate interfaces with pipeline, hydraulic, roads, survey, geotechnical and ESIA teams.
