Placements24 is seeking an Associate General Counsel in Gauteng to bolster the legal function for a rapidly expanding technology firm. You will handle a broad spectrum of commercial contracts, IP matters, and regulatory compliance to support growth and protect the company’s interests.

The role requires an Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa with 5–7 years’ relevant experience, preferably in technology or IP law.

Qualifications

• Admitted SA attorney with strong background in corporate tech? law and IP.
• Experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements.
• Solid knowledge of data privacy regulations (POPIA) and regulatory compliance.
• In-house experience in tech sector is a plus; able to liaise with cross‑functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Review, draft, and negotiate software licenses, SaaS, and vendor agreements.
• Advise on IP protection including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
• Ensure compliance with POPIA and applicable SA law.
• Support business development with legal risk assessments for partnerships.
• Lead legal research and provide actionable opinions and policy guidance.
• Develop and implement internal legal policies and training.

About the Role

Our client, a rapidly expanding technology firm, is actively seeking an Associate General Counsel to bolster their legal department in Tembisa, Gauteng . This critical position will involve providing a broad spectrum of legal services, with a focus on commercial contracts, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance within the tech sector. Key Responsibilities

• Review, draft, and negotiate various agreements, including software licenses, SaaS agreements, and vendor contracts.
• Advise on intellectual property protection, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
• Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations (e.g., POPIA) and other relevant legislation.
• Support the business development team with legal aspects of new partnerships and ventures.
• Manage and resolve legal disputes and claims efficiently.
• Conduct legal research and provide well-reasoned legal opinions.
• Assist in the development and implementation of legal policies and training programs.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify and mitigate legal risks.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant legal experience, preferably with a focus on technology, corporate law, or intellectual property.
• Solid understanding of contract law, intellectual property law, and data privacy regulations.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
• Proficiency in drafting complex legal documents.
• Ability to manage a diverse workload and meet tight deadlines.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with internal teams and external parties.
• Previous in-house experience within the technology sector is a significant advantage.
