Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Provide individual and group counselling to learners facing emotional, behavioural, or social challenges.
• Conduct psychosocial assessments and develop tailored intervention plans.
• Support learners in overcoming barriers to learning and personal development.
• Engage families and guardians to address home dynamics affecting learners.
• Refer families to external social services when needed and build community partnerships.
• Collaborate with teachers and therapists in a School-Based Support Team and prepare progress reports.

Key performance areas

Learner Support & Counselling

• Provide individual and group counselling to learners facing emotional, behavioural, or social challenges
• Conduct psychosocial assessments and develop tailored intervention plans
• Support learners in overcoming barriers to learning and personal development

Family & Community Engagement

• Work with parents and guardians to address family dynamics affecting learners
• Refer families to external social services where necessary
• Build partnerships with community organisations to strengthen learner support

School‑Based Support Team

• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to review learner progress
• Collaborate with teachers and therapists to ensure cohesive interventions
• Compile and maintain progress reports
• Provide workshops for teachers on identifying and managing social/emotional challenges
• Conduct awareness sessions on topics such as bullying, trauma, and resilience
• Support staff in implementing learner accommodations and inclusive practices

Qualifications, experience and skills

• Legal Requirement: Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP)
• Experience: Minimum 5 years in school‑based or child‑focused social work (multidisciplinary team experience advantageous)
