Job summary

Curro Mossel Bay is seeking a School Counsellor to support learners in a full-time role beginning January 2027. The incumbent will provide individual and group counselling, contribute to a holistic counselling programme and help create an enabling school culture.

The role emphasizes working with learners, parents and staff, maintaining records, and referring to appropriate services while demonstrating patience, compassion and a passion for children.

Qualifications

• Honours in Social Work or equivalent; Master’s in Psychology preferred.
• Experience in a school setting or counselling role is advantageous.
• Strong classroom and stakeholder communication with learners, parents and staff.

Responsibilities

• Conduct individual, group or class counselling as part of a holistic programme.
• Contribute to a school counselling programme and learner development.
• Prepare reports and maintain records on learners and referrals.
• Collaborate with staff to foster a supportive school culture and early intervention.
• Refer to community and national resources as needed.

Key performance areas

• Carrying out counselling sessions on an individual, group or class level as part of an integrated preventive and intervention service
• Contributing in an active manner to the development of the school counselling programme in support of the holistic development of each learner
• Assisting in the development and nurturing of an enabling school culture and helping learners become empowered for positive action and change
• Intervening to give learners the opportunity to manage more effectively their life circumstances and to manage their lives more effectively
• Assisting learners to develop their personal, social and autonomous learning skills
• Counselling learners and their parents with respect to intra- and inter-personal issues and behavioural problems
• Preparing reports and maintaining records on learners
• Making the necessary referrals according to established policies and procedures
• Adopting preventive measures that empower learners to avoid problems as much as possible
• Providing a continuum of preventative, developmental, remedial, and intervention services and programmes and facilitating referral to resources and services at both community and national levels
