Job summary

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium (OHDZA) is seeking a Veterinary Technician to join the Animal Health team at our new 32,000 square foot hospital. You will support preventive, routine and emergency veterinary care for animals across the zoo, aquarium and safari park, working closely with veterinarians, technicians and hospital staff.

The role requires AVMA-accredited VT program degree, VTNE, Nebraska license within 6 months, ability to lift up to 50 pounds, weekend availability, and strong

Qualifications

• Must have earned a degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary technician program and must have successfully passed the VTNE.
• Must have the ability to obtain a registered veterinary technician license from the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Board within 6 months of the hire date.
• Able to work in a team environment with animal care staff and other departments and foster trust-based relationships.
• Must have the willingness and ability to function as a team member in a fast-paced environment with a high caseload.
• Must possess high emotional intelligence, and situational awareness.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, preferred.
• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state driver’s license.
• Candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative TB test, possess a valid driver’s license with a good history, and obtain the rabies vaccine.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the veterinary technician team to provide clinical support for preventative, routine, and emergency care.
• Assist in operant conditioning of animals for medical behaviors.
• Maintain hospital programming through supply management, equipment care, cleaning/disinfection, and readiness.
• Prepare for and assist with examinations focusing on anesthesia monitoring and diagnostics.
• Provide clinical laboratory support and submit samples to outside laboratories.
• Provide husbandry support for neonates with Hospital Keeper collaboration.
• Participate in maintaining a high-volume sample storage program.
• Provide daily care, observation, and monitoring of hospitalized cases.
• Assist with the pharmacy program by filling prescriptions and managing inventory.
• Ensure accurate documentation and regulatory compliance across veterinary operations.
