Job summary

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is seeking a Senior Veterinary Technician to join a team of veterinarians and technicians at our state‑of‑the‑art hospital at the Zoo and Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park.

The role supports preventive, routine and emergency care, assists in training programs, hospital programming, and documentation to meet regulatory requirements. Requires AVMA-accredited program degree, VTNE, and 5+ years in zoological settings.

Qualifications

• Must have earned a degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary technician program and must have successfully passed the VTNE.
• Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology/nursing or a related field is preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years full‑time experience working as a licensed veterinary technician in a zoological or wildlife rehabilitation setting.
• Able to work in a team environment with animal care staff and other departments and foster trust‑based relationships.
• Communication skills sufficient to convey complex biological and scientific concepts to diverse audiences and bring action to support an initiative.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary technician support for preventative, routine, and emergency care across the Zoo, Aquarium, and Safari Park.
• Assist in developing and maintaining skills-training programs for veterinary technicians.
• Assist in hospital programming and supply management under supervision.
• Prepare for and assist with examinations, monitor anesthesia, and perform diagnostics.
• Provide in-house clinical lab support and sample submission to external labs.
• Maintain hospital equipment and ensure regulatory documentation is accurate and timely.
• Mentor visiting students and interns as needed.
• Support animal care professionals in medical behaviors and pharmacology programs.
