Job summary

The City of Indianapolis Marion County is seeking a Zoning & Licensing Inspector to enforce local land use regulations. This role specializes in interpreting and applying ordinances and performing field inspections across various property types.

Inspections support enforcement actions, data collection, court testimony, and coordination with city agencies. The position requires mobility, valid Indiana driver’s license, and the ability to work a rotating on-call schedule.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or four years of relevant work experience in customer service, conflict management, public administration, or interpretation of technical content.
• Strong customer service and public speaking skills; ability to act as expert witness in environmental court.
• Ability to handle conflicts with tact and make independent field decisions.

Responsibilities

• Read, interpret, and explain local ordinances to others.
• Conduct field inspections for compliance with land use regulations and ordinances.
• Research land use petitions, permits, and case files related to investigations.
• Refer to zoning maps and plats; gather legal property information.
• Initiate enforcement actions, issue citations, and testify in court.
