Job summary

City of Norfolk is seeking a skilled Code Enforcement Officer to inspect properties, enforce zoning and building codes, and issue violation notices. You will interact with property owners, contractors, and other city inspectors, and prepare cases for prosecution.

Required: two years in code enforcement, valid driver's license, and ability to obtain required certifications within 18 months. The role offers a 7:30 AM–4:00 PM schedule and a $5,000 signing bonus.

Qualifications

  • Two years in code enforcement.
  • Preferred: two or more years interpreting zoning ordinances, building codes, and other relevant city or state codes, conducting field investigations reviewing construction, repair and renovation plans, and issuing violation notices.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects properties where work may be taking place without necessary permits and tracking through enforcement and permitting process.
  • Conducts ongoing inspections of properties registered to operate short-term rentals, ensuring continued compliance with approved permits.
  • Enforces zoning ordinance and building code by conducting field investigations, reviewing permit requests, plans for compliance, and issuing violation notices.
  • Requires regular interactions with property owners, contractors, and other inspectors from various city agencies; occasional testimony and presentations at hearings and court hearings.
  • Provides assistance to the public by receiving zoning violation complaints and explaining regulations.
  • Prepares cases and compiles data for the prosecution of violations to city code.
