Job summary

The City of Virginia Beach's Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation seeks Code Enforcement Inspector to uphold the Virginia Maintenance Code across neighborhoods, conduct field inspections, and guide property owners through compliance steps.

This role may be filled as Code Inspector I or II, requiring state certification within 18 months, five years of related experience, and a Virginia or NC driver's license; the city offers benefits and professional development.

Qualifications

• High school or GED plus five years experience as Housing/Property Maintenance Inspector.
• Certification as Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector within 18 months.
• Valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Enforce building and property maintenance codes within your assigned area.
• Conduct daily field inspections of existing structures, properties, and undeveloped land.
• Investigate complaints and identify potential violations.
• Notify owners of findings and guide them through compliance steps.
• Issue notices of violation and summonses as needed.
• Explain regulations to residents, businesses, and partners.
• Testify in court when required.
