Job summary

American University’s Office of Zero Waste is seeking new students to assist with zero waste projects across campus. Work will span field and office tasks to learn about waste management on a college campus, including organics collection, contamination control, and food recovery efforts.

Hours are 5–20 per week, with pay of $18.40 per hour. Eligibility is limited to enrolled AU students, and some weekend hours may be available but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Drive AU Facilities Management Vehicle to dining locations across campus and collect food scraps for AU's organics program, tracking weights and checking for contaminants.
• Research contamination control interventions and implement projects to reduce non-compostable items in AU's organics waste stream; refine waste sorting signage and recycling design; develop educational materials.
• Aid in expanding food recovery efforts on campus and research hunger-fighting partners AU can collaborate with to distribute recovered food items.
• Assist in tracking and improving recycling rates across campus.

Summary

American University's Office of Zero Waste is looking for newstudents to assist with zero waste projects across campus. Thisposition includes many opportunities to work both in the field andin the office to learn more about waste management systems on acollege campus. Students will work on projects related to foodwaste collection, waste stream contamination control, wastemanagement education, and food recovery.

Essential Functions

1. Organics Collection

• Drive an AU Facilities Management Vehicle to dining locationsacross campus and collect food scraps to dispose of in AU'sorganics compactor, track weights and inspect organics waste streamfor contaminants.

2. Contamination Control and Education

• Research contamination control interventions and implementprojects that will help reduce the amount of non-compostable itemsin AU's organics waste stream.
• Help research improvements to AU's waste sorting signage andassist with refining AU's public space recycling design.
• Develop Educational materials.

3. Food Recovery

• Aid in the expansion of food recovery efforts on campus.
• Research hunger fighting partners AU can partner with todistribute recovered food items.

4. Recycling

• Assist in efforts to track and improve recycling rates acrosscampus.
