Job summary

The YMCA is seeking a School Age Counselor to deliver the school-age program for an assigned group of students, supervised by a designated supervisor. The role emphasizes safety, quality service, and connection with members, families, and staff.

Responsibilities include supervising activities, maintaining attendance records, and communicating with parents. The ideal candidate will meet minimum age/education, have child-care experience, and complete required trainings and background checks.

Qualifications

• Minimum 18 years of age.
• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Six months experience working with children.
• Negative TB test within last 2 years.
• CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 certification within 30 days.
• MAT certification may be required.
• Complete trainings: NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment.
• Criminal, Virginia State Police and CPS background checks completed.

Responsibilities

• Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
• Promote professional work environment by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
• Lead to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
• Supervise and ensure safety of assigned students; maintain sight and sound supervision.
• Maintain attendance and other records as assigned.
• Prepare and clean supplies for daily activities.
• Participate in organized games/activities including swimming, teambuilding, arts and crafts.
• Communicate with parents regarding student needs and report daily activities.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Follow Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers and Platinum standards.
• Wear staff uniform/name tag or professional attire when appropriate.
• Lead in emergencies; report accidents per Emergency Communication Action Plan.
• Ensure a safe environment and follow EOP.
• Carry out related duties as needed by Youth and Family Services Dept.
