Job summary

YMCA of San Diego County is seeking a Dance Instructor to build positive relationships with members and lead dance classes in a safe, effective way. You will greet participants, demonstrate moves, cue modifications, and ensure a welcoming, energetic class that supports physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.

Required: minimum age 16, ability to obtain fingerprinting, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications from recognized organizations, and the ability to lead and adapt for all fitness levels.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 16 or older.
  • Work Permit if enrolled in high school.
  • Fingerprinting required prior to reporting to work; includes arrest notifications.
  • Dance experience preferred.
  • All trainings within 90 days from date of hire.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with members of all fitness levels and abilities.
  • Knowledge of fitness principles and practical applications.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification from one of: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, American Safety & Health Institute.

  • Maintain a clean and safe workout area.
  • Effectively utilize scheduled class time.
  • Set up and breakdown class equipment within allotted time.
  • Build community by learning names and helping members reach health and wellness goals.
  • Adhere to YMCA core functions and class guidelines.
  • Communicate verbally to groups of members.
  • Lead and participate in exercise/fitness activities; respond swiftly in emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Overview

The Dance Instructor is responsible for building positive relationships among members, participants, volunteers and staff by actively greeting and providing excellent customer service, guidance and leadership. The Instructor creates and leads dance classes in a safe, effective, and timely manner, appropriate to the level of the participants in class, to enhance the physical, mental, and spiritual health of each student.

  • Monday, Thursday, or a Saturday

Responsibilities
  • Create a positive member experience through welcoming participants and ensuring they are actively engaged in their workout
  • Provide a safe workout routine by demonstrating proper form and technique, appropriate modifications, and cueing
  • Maintain a clean and safe workout area
  • Effectively utilize scheduled class time
  • Properly set up and breakdown class equipment in allotted timeframe
  • Build community through forming positive relationships through learning names, and helping members reach their Health & Wellness Goals
  • Adhere to the core functions of the YMCA and exemplify Y Group Exercise Class Guidelines
  • Ability to communicate verbally to large and small groups of members

  • Physical ability to lead and participate in exercise/fitness activities

  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency

  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 16 years of age or older
  • If actively enrolled in high school, a valid school district Work Permit is required
  • 18 years of age or older, licensing, state law and our government funders require that staff within YMCA of San Diego County be fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and include subsequent arrest notifications
  • Dance experience preferred
  • All job required trainings within 90 days from date of hire
  • Strong communication skills and the capability to work with members of all fitness levels and abilities
  • Knowledge of fitness principles and practical applications required
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within30 daysofhireand must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
    • American Red Cross
    • American Heart Association
    • American Safety & Health Institute

Pay Range

USD $19.69 - USD $23.63 /Hr.
